"Mer? Meredith?!" Derek tried to wake up his ex wife
"Mama?" Maddie stood in the door opening, watching as her mom was laying down on the floor
"Maddie, come here sweetie-" Derek tried while calling 911
Maddie hesitated. In the meantime Derek sends an ambulance to his house, not daring to let go of Meredith's pulse. She was hot and sweaty
"Is mommy okay?" Maddie frowned
"Come here baby. Mommy's just sleeping, you wanna help me comfort her? I think mommy wants a kiss on her cheek from you." Derek tried, wanting his daughter close
Maddie slowly walked over and placed a soft kiss on Meredith's cheek until the paramedics ran in, Derek quickly lifted his daughter in his arms
"She's being treated, she's receiving her AC chemo twice a week but she's feverish. I think an infection combined with fatigue as she hasn't had a seizure so it's not the fever." Derek explained and saw the guys weirdly looking at him. "I'm a neurosurgeon. You need to bring us to Grey Sloan." Derek said
The paramedics lifted Meredith onto a stretcher and carried her out Of the house into the ambulance, Maddie and Derek getting into the back
"Mommy gonna be okay?" Maddie asked the paramedic that was adjusting something to get Meredith's fever down and some fluids to hydrate her
"We'll do everything we can." The guy softly smiled, not wanting to promise things he couldn't make sure was gonna happen
"I'm scared. The ambulance is loud." Maddie muttered in her father's chest
"The sirens are so mommy gets the fastest help possible." Derek said and quickly texted Richard, not wanting to call as Maddie was so frightened. The girl started sobbing in his lap until they arrived in the ambulance bay
"Shepherd?" Bailey frowned as she saw Derek in the ambulance. Soon the paramedics confirmed what she expected; this was Meredith Grey. "Get her to an examination room right away, we need to cool her down and check her blood counts!"
"She was dizzy. She had a fever, I was gonna bring her in but-" Derek stopped, Maddie still crying in his arms
"I thought she was staying with Richard and Adele?" Bailey frowned
"He said she had to stop working. And as stubborn as she is she didn't agree. She stayed at my house for the night.." Derek quickly explained
"Grey.." Meredith groaned as she was pushed into the examination room on a gurney
"What the hell?" Alex ran towards Derek
"Alex-" Derek cried out. "Can you bring Maddie to daycare, please? I need to stay with Mer.." Derek sighed
"No! Wanna stay with mommy!" Maddie screamed
"But baby, the doctors need to work on mommy, we can't help her now." Derek tried
"Do you wanna come with me to get some ice cream while we wait to see mommy?" Alex tried, wanting to help his best friend
Maddie shrugged her shoulders but at least stopped crying
"Thanks Alex.." Derek sighed, feeling awful for his daughter and Meredith
"Keep me updated, please. I won't go too far." Alex placed his hand on Derek's back
"I will." Derek promised
...
"Derek, we hooked her up to an IV but she needs to be admitted. She's having an infection because her immune system is too weak." Bailey said as she walked to Derek
"Damnit.." Derek sighed, knowing she would hate being admitted
"I'm sorry.." Bailey sighed. "You can go in, but wear a gown and a mask, please." She said
Derek nods and quickly changes into the gown and mask and enters her ICU room. The next challenge will be that Maddie isn't allowed here
"M-Mads.." Derek suddenly heard Meredith's weak voice
"Shh. You collapsed, you're in the hospital." He informed her
"H-Hospital?" Meredith frowned and slowly opened her eyes, seeing it was an ICU room. "Fuck.."
"Sleep a bit more, you need your strength. You're fighting an injection, Mer."
Meredith weakly nods, not in the mood to complain about anything else and just closed her eyes and drifted off immediately
"Derek!" He suddenly heard Richard
Derek nodded and stood up. He removed the protective gear and went to Richard in the hallway
"Bailey told me she collapsed.." Richard said sadly
"She did. She's currently fighting an infection.." Derek explained. "She'll hate it. She hates not being able to see Mads.." derek thought out loud
"She needs to get stronger soon. I hate seeing her like that.." Richard sighed as he looked through the window
"She looks so sick.." Derek muttered as he looked through the window. The bald spots really starting to be visible, her skin pale and her small form looked tiny in the hospital bed
"She does.." Richard sighed, his hand in Derek's shoulder until they got disturbed by Alex calling
"Alex?" Derek picked up
"Can I come back with Maddie? She keeps crying for you guys." He explained
"Yeah sure, please." Derek muttered, he couldn't keep his eyes off Meredith
A little while later Maddie was crying in her father's arms
"Mommy will be better very soon." Derek tried to comfort her. "Maybe when mommy's awake you can wave at her, would you like that?" He asked
"Yes!" Maddie nods. "I wanna cuddle with mommy!" The blonde girl said, tears streaming down her cheeks
"Not now, Mads. Mommy's very sick now so Doctor Bailey is doing her best to get mommy much better. That's why mommy needs lots of sleep." Derek explained
"But mommy loves it when I sweep with her!" Maddie insists
"I know sweetie.." Derek sighed, lost for how he had to tell his little girl that her mother was very sick
"I want my mommy!" Maddie started pouting
"I know.. me too.." Derek quietly muttered so Maddie wouldn't hear. He hugged her tight to his chest, wanting to make her feel safe instead of having to face this
