Three years later

Anxiety fills me as my mom works on my hair. The ring on my finger so heavy.

The curls around my head bounce every time she turns my head to check on my finished look.

My wedding day is going according to plan. Having to decide on a theme was the hardest part. I wanted to do a green theme but Mateo wanted to to red. We went back and forth for three months before deciding.

I walk the aisle in thirty minutes. Nerves fill me. What if I fall? What if drew and Alaina's kid trips me?

The endless possibilities of something going wrong floats around in my head before sinking in.

A sharp pull to my scalp pulls me back from my day dream.

"I'm getting married not groomed like a dog." I give my mom a pointed look but she sniffles and pulls back.

The reflection in the mirror shows perfect curly hair that's half up half down and my dress is a cloud around me as I sit on the stool. My mom rests her hand on my shoulders and glances over me with tears in her eyes.

The day I've been dreaming of since a little girl has finally come true. I'm getting married to my best friend. I get to spend the rest of my life with Mateo.

My mom squeezes her hand once then helps me stand. The dress around me flows then rests around my body.

Euphoria is the only feeling I can use to describe this moment.

"You ready?" My mom asks me softly.

Her wrinkled face smiles at me in the reflection. Oh how she's aged so beautifully.

"Am I allowed to say no?" I shake my hands out and take a deep breath in.

"Marriage is a scary thing honey." She smiles at me and kisses my cheek.

The mirror shows me a grown version of what I normally see. My cheekbones are more defined with age and my hair longer and healthier.

Being a brown women has shown me many things. Love is hard. It's a roller coaster of emotions that you didn't even know you had.

My journey for finding love hasn't been an easy one. Love isn't an easy thing either.

Admitting that I love Mateo was easy but finding out was hard. Who would ruin their friendship of eighteen years?

That's what fills you.

Anxiety.

Coming to terms with it was difficult. I'm just glad Mateo and I made it through together.

The door clicks open and in comes Malia and the twins. I fan my eyes with my hands and hug them as much as I can with this dress.

"You look beautiful Zaya!" Malia mutters into my hair.

"Thank you." I pull back from her and smile.

Having her at my wedding was a blessing. She's a second mother to me. I grew up practically at her house.

"Zay!" Navi squeals and tackles me in a hug.
