BOOK ONE

CHAPTER EIGHTEEN.

❝ what else is there to talk about? ❞

THE FIRST thing Aria noticed about Tartarus, was that it was fucking cold. After her less than pleasant descent down from the cavern, she had hit the ground with a thud. It was too dark to see any damage, but by the pain that shot through her body at every movement, she could tell it wasn't going to be pretty.

She took a tentative step forward, her boots crunching on the frost laden earth. The frigid air bit into her skin, and each breath felt like an icy blade. Aria shivered, both from the cold and the eerie stillness that enveloped the underworld.

"Great," she muttered to herself, her words dissipating into the darkness. "Of course, it had to be freezing."

As Aria ventured further, the shadows seemed to deepen, obscuring her surroundings. She could barely make out twisted, skeletal trees in the distance, their branches casting elongated shadows that whispered ancient secrets.

The pain in her body intensified with each step, but Aria pressed on, determined to make sense of her surroundings. As she walked, she became aware of a faint, distant whisper, a murmur carried by the chilling wind. The voices seemed to speak in a language of shadows, cryptic and foreboding.

Suddenly, the shadows coalesced, forming a vague figure in front of her. Aria squinted, trying to discern the shape, when the darkness seemed to recede, revealing none other than the spectral form of....her mother.

Her voice caught in her throat.

As her mother stepped forward, her movements danced with the shadows, each step leaving a subtle trail of stardust in the air. The features of her face were tender and familiar to Aria - the gentle slope of her nose, the way her eyes held an ageless wisdom, and the hint of a reassuring smile that touched the corners of her lips.

"Mom?" she managed to say.

A soft light emanated from the woman. "Aria, my child, you have come at last."

Aria couldn't hide her bewilderment. "Mom, why are you here? In Tartarus?"

Her mother shrugged. "Long story. I'll tell you after we discuss your fate."

Well that wasn't ominous at all.

Her brow furrowed. "Fate?"

Her Mom nodded, a gentle smile on her spectral face.

"Walk with me, sweetheart. Oh, how I've missed you."

Aria felt like breaking down then and there.

She took a deep breath. "Alright Mom. Start this apparently 'long story' from the beginning."

"It started before you were born. I had a....relationship of sorts with Hades-"

Aria cut her off. "You what now."

"I was attracted to the darkness, what can I say. I had a thing for bad boys back in my twenties don't judge me."

"I am judging you Mom, but continue."

"So as I was saying, I had a relationship of sorts with Hades. One day, a messenger told me that I would come to be with child. He said that my baby would grow up one day and save the world, both the mortal realm and non mortal realm. He said that this baby would be born from the goodness of the sun. And that's when your father stepped into the picture. I realised that he was the goodness, and I left Hades. There were no hard feelings. He understood. That's why he's allowed me to pull you down here."
