There's no correct or incorrect way to describe Gerard's way of living, or how he came to earn a life such as his. He wasn't the type of person to complain or the type of person to find comfort in things which made his personality slightly different from everyone else. That's the only way to explain why Gerard Way's hair turned a chalky white when he was only nine years old. Surely the average person who didn't live in Gerard's generation would most likely think; What's so wrong with having white hair?

There's nothing wrong with having bleached white hair, but the reasoning for having it is the 'wrong' part. At the simple age of seven years old, Gerard realized that he absolutely loved flowers, meadows, anything colorful and living. Of course that's a beautiful thing, but for his parents it was only another thing for them to worry about. Gerard had always been different from the other kids, everyone noticed his differences in the short time that he was allowed to attend a public school. He was more animated when he spoke, he hated wearing uniforms, he despised being told what to do and he absolutely loved drawing. Whether it be on his khaki pants or his vocabulary notebook, there was always some type of doodle there. He also picked flowers all the time, sang when he wasn't instructed to and even laughed just for the sake of it.

This suggests that Gerard is obviously a very creative and happy-go-lucky boy with a different set of mind from everyone around him. And let's just say, creativity and natural happiness did not get along with the current system of government that Gerard and his family were living under.

Many, many years before Gerard was born, two groups of people were established along with living sections all across the states. The groups of people weren't sent to certain living sections as they couldn't be determined until the age of eight years old or higher. These two discriminative groups were labeled as the Diffs and the Sames. Sure, they're self explanatory, but there were more to these groups than meets the naked eye. The government had decided people with generally creative minds were somehow too powerful and had too much ability compared to those that were just average. So, powerful minds were labeled as Diffs, because of course, they were different. They were free spirits that, in the government's opinion, were threats to the tranquility of their precious nation. Then came another ordeal. Diffs, when they were identified, would be given some kind of physical appearance or change to bring them public shame wherever they went.

How the government made it possible is a complete mystery, but before people could protest, their appearances were changing. From hair turning abnormal colors, to pictures appearing across the skin, to scars and everything in between, you name it. - The second group on the other hand were considered 'Sames.' They were the ideal humans. They were average, described as perfect, they were role models upon school children and mustered as upper class and wealthy. They weren't anything special, to be blunt. They were your typical snobby, egotistic assholes who were too busy fucking themselves on their high horses to see real problems in the world.

Hence, bringing us to meet Frank Iero. To say Frank was full of himself is an understatement, he was farther up his own ass than his parents were. He was in fact, a major role model to the younger children in his community. He was the apple of his mother's eye, the song in his father's imperious heart. He also happened to live directly across from Gerard Way.

They both knew that each other existed, Frank was more aware of Gerard than Gerard was aware of Frank. Mostly because Frank would see the white-haired boy sitting in the garden in front of his house, every single morning when he walked to school. He knew Gerard was a Diff, it wasn't hard to miss. Frank would scoff, seeing Gerard sitting in the flower beds with his ivory hair practically twinkling in the early morning sun. But most shockingly, Frank didn't have such a problem with Gerard. He didn't care for his existence and he really didn't mind if Gerard was a Diff or not. Gerard wasn't in his life so why would he give a shit?

Frank's parents sometimes would talk vulgarly about the Way family at supper time, Frank usually stayed out of it though. He didn't agree that talking complete rubbish about someone's family issue would help the situation at all. That's one moral that Frank had straight. There were definitely rumors about the Way family that floated around the living section, some good and some bad. Bad ones were usually started by the Iero family since they basically watched every move Donna Way made.

Donna Way didn't care much for Linda Iero and Linda Iero didn't care much for Donna Way. There's no specific reason as to how they became so hateful to one another. Sometimes feelings bloom for no reason.

But, if you asked anybody in the asscrack of their living section, they'd probably tell you that these two certain families were utter rivals. They simply didn't like each other, they never did, even before Gerard became a Diff. It was sort of a family rivalry that dated way back into earlier generations. Nobody dared talk about their hatred for each other or they'd be shunned for intruding on someone else's family business.

Although, intruding on someone's family business or even just basic well being, can lead to actual friendships. Friendships that aren't necessarily accepted.

Strangely, a basic well being check is how Frank Iero came to meet Gerard Way.
