Fourth of July special!

-----+------+-----

The warmth of the day lingered in the air even as the sky began to dim. The smell of sparklers drifted with the breeze and I closed my eyes as I listened to the people around us. Children squealed as they waved around sparklers and put glow sticks around their necks, while parents conversed lightly with each other.

I laid my head on Jay's chest as he wrapped his arm around me. We were on an old blanket that we had spread out on the grass, already watching the cloudless sky as we waited for the show to start.

"Daddy! Daddy!" Diana shouted as she jumped on top of us. Jay grunted slightly before sitting up, pulling me with him as he looked down at our daughter.

"Yes, Darling?" he asked, smiling down at the little girl in his lap.

"Can you help me?" She asked, holding up two connected glow sticks with one hand and a third in the other.

"Of course," he took it from her and put a connecter on the end, making the two into three. "Is that good?"

"One more," she pointed to the end, wanting to make it into a circle. Jay did as she told him to and soon, he handed it back to her.

"There you go."

Diana shook her head, "It's for you."

She tried putting it on his head, but his tricorn got in the way. "Hold on, honey," he told her before removing it and helping put the glow sticks over his head. "Thank you, Diana."

She smiled and giggled at him before running off to play with her brother.

Jay didn't wear his tricorn much anymore, but they had had a reenactment in town earlier, so he had dug out his old clothes and helped out. He had even been in the parade because of it.

"It's nice seeing you like this again," I smiled as we laid back down and got comfortable again. He only hummed in response, pulling me closer to him.

The first firework zoomed up into the sky and popped. Gold sparks shimmered as they fell towards the ground while two more went up. After a few minutes, the big fireworks, the ones with thunderous booms that shook the very ground you sat on started up.

I looked up at Jay. He had the same starry eyed amazed look he had had the first time he saw fireworks. He had asked me if it was electricity, and I told him it was closer to cannon fire.

As if sensing my gaze, Jay turned to look at me. With a raised brow, he asked, "What?"

I smiled and told him, "I love you."

He kissed me gently and said, "I love you, too."

As we turned our gazes back up towards the sky, Thomas and Diana came to lay beside us. Diana curled up into her father's chest while Thomas snuggled into my side. He was seven now, and his sister was almost five. It wasn't hard to see they had picked favorites.

"I liked that one," Jay grinned, pointing up at the sky while people around us clapped and cheered in the momentary silence. It had been one of the ones that sounded like static, or Velcro, as the pre-exploded sparks went off for a second time.

"I like the ones that look like weeping willows," I said as another loud boom traveled through our chests and lit up the sky.

"I like the smiley faces," Thomas giggled as he watched the sky.

"I like the sparkly ones," Diana inputted.

I smiled, laying on the ground surrounded by my family. I didn't know what I would do without them, but I couldn't help but wonder about all of the people we left behind.

Liam, Rose, Thomas, Uncle Paul. They were my family too.

I wondered what had happened to them all after we left. I new Uncle Paul was okay because of that book I found, but it didn't say much about the others.

I could only hope that they found a family as wonderful as mine.

I smiled softly and watched the sky. Lying here with the people I loved, I felt complete. I felt good. I felt happy.

Nothing in the world could change that feeling.
