REIN PARTENS OFTEN WONDERED HOW DIFFERENT HER LIFE WOULD BE. She often wondered how her life's story would have panned out had she not ever moved to the Outer Banks full term in the summer before sixth grade. She also couldn't help but to be curious on the way she would look at life if her parents weren't the type of parents they were.

Ashton Partens had proven to be a good father throughout her younger years, but seemingly chose alcohol over his two children when times got hard. He got mean and vicious, and that would prove to be something Rein could never forgive. Of course, she always had the good memories with her dad, but the bad ones often outshined the good.

Lina Harper, on the other hand, was never a great mother. She often indulged in just about anything to escape actually being a mother to her daughter. Despite her disposition for her only child, she did try to be a mother when the times presented itself. She signed the release forms for school, but that was about as far as she stretched. Rein had learned who her mother truly was when the women wanted nothing to with her at only ten years old.

Jack seemed to be the only relative she had that was truly ever on her side. He had always been the one to pick her up when she fell down after their shared father had turned to alcohol. He was the one who stepped up when the opportunity was needed. Sure, he fell into his own spiral of drugs in his later teenage years, but nonetheless, he still was there for his sister. He only craved the high to escape the harsh reality of worrying about their family problems on his own, not wanting to induce his younger sister into them too. I'm no world did he ever mean to find himself clinging to his life the day before Christmas Eve.
