On our way to meet Anissa's mom, I have a small nervous breakdown. I've never done anything like this before, first girlfriend to meet the parents. I can feel my heartbeat faster than usual, which doesn't help my silent anxiety. Anissa just keeps smiling at me and holding my hand in hers every chance she gets, which helps so much but doesn't exactly kill my anxiety

"You're going to be fine, babe" Anissa smiles, turning into a neighborhood, "She's going to love you and there is nothing to worry about. I promise"

"We're almost there, huh?" I look around at the nice houses, counting them as we pass by the. 15 and she pulls into the 16th that holds a black Jeep Wrangler and a Cadillac in the driveway

"I didn't know, but my grandma is here too" Anissa turns the car off, "Are you ready?"

"No!" I shake my head, taking my seatbelt off

"Baby, they think you are the cutest thing on Earth right now" She opens her door and walks around to mine, "They hate my brother's wife, so that's a step up"

"They hate Lacy?" I laugh

"Yes, with a passion. They call her a fake broad" she shrugs, "They don't think she's good enough for my brother"

Oh fuck. I'm walking into this with too open of eyes. Save me.

Anissa grabs my hand and leads me to the door, knocking on it before the door swings wide open and I'm met with a beautiful Black woman whose smile reaches to her ears

"Hello Queen!" She wraps me in a huge hug, "I'm so happy to finally meet you!"

"Hello Ms. Reign!" I struggle to get the words out because she's holding my breath captive

"Don't do that! Call me Michelle!"

'Boss, Michelle Obama! Purse so heavy getting Oprah Dollars!' I sing the Fifth Harmony song "Bo$$" in my head

"Michelle" I emphasize using her name, "it's nice to meet you"

"Come in!" She smiles, holding the door open for us to enter. Anissa allows me to enter first before she follows along and closes the door behind her. I take my shoes off, first instinct, and follow her mom to the kitchen where another beautiful black woman is waiting for us with a big smile

"Queen!" She stands up from her chair and embraced me with open arms, "You are even more beautiful in person! Anissa has told us a lot about you!"

I look to Anissa, who just smiles at me, "She has told me a lot about the women who've raised her"

"Of course she has!" Her grandmother lets me go, "Call me Taraji."

"Yes ma'am" I smile, feeling the relief rush through my body that I don't have to do much to impress... just not fuck it up. That's a good start, right??

We have mixed conversation, mostly them asking me about my job and interest in life, views on marriage, and stuff like that

"Anissa has one of the toughest jobs in America right now" Michelle shakes her head, "A cop in a country where some want to act right and the few bad ones want to screw it up for the rest"

"We didn't know how to take her being an officer at first, with all the bad news surrounding the job" Taraji looks at Anissa, "But she has done nothing but be a light since starting 3 years ago. God has really kept her safe"

"Being a black female police officer isn't easy" Anissa laughs, "I had to go through so much scrutiny when I started. It was hard, but my support system got me through"

"We had to" Michelle grins, "We're so proud of you"

"I know, mom" Anissa smiles, "Queen here just got a promotion to being the assistant to the rising CEO of Kingston Inc."
