23 June : on doodles and undergrowth

The next time you feel like a robot,
A sum total of manufactured parts haphazardly sewn together,
Look at the last doodle you made –
The curves, the lines, the caricatures, the obscure shapes –
Sprawled at the corner of a page,
Over the dry letters of a mortal language,
Over numbers and symbols of derivation,
Over sentences and paragraphs about the importance of discipline;
No, don't look for a meaning there,
Instead
Look for the similarities –
Do you see an abandoned house conquered by the undergrowth?
Our insides are buzzing with life,
Like lightning amidst the clouds, yes,
But more than that,
Like the green peeking out from the cracks
In the walls, the pavement, the feet of an immortal tree.
It is scared of all the concrete nearby
But when no one is looking,
It grows grows grows
Taking over an entire planet
That is a gazillion times larger than its own size.
