Coraline didn't speak a word to her family on the way home, she simply propped her feet up on the leather seats and gazed out the window as the rain fell, I watched as she drew patterns on the windows, shapes, and circles. Annie was doing the exact same thing, and I observed as she massaged the heel of her foot as though she felt the pain too. I knew what that was like, sometimes when you have a twin your brain makes you think you can feel their pain.
When we got home I offered to carry Coraline inside but she insisted on walking- well limping inside before sitting down on the couch. I made my way into the kitchen where Isobel handed me a pack of frozen peas, she didn't say anything but I knew she was desperate for a relationship with the twins.
"Why didn't you tell her?" I asked and she shot me a confused glare,
"Tell her what sweetie?" She asks but even I can see the guilt behind her eyes,
"That she did good and that you're proud of her." I clarified, I at least expected her to do so.
"She always makes it clear that that's not my place," Isobel tells me with a sad smile, "and I didn't want to overstep my boundaries."
"I see." I reply, "you're good to them and I'm sure they'll warm up to you eventually."
"Thank you, Jude, I- I truly hope so too." She sighs, and she has tears in her eyes, "sorry I'm just really emotional, but yeah I'm trying I really am."
