Disclaimer: Obligatory "excerpts from the story titled do not belong to me". I will use excerpts from my own crappy drafts as comparison examples so you all get the chance to call me a narcissist. Also, as a warning to all, this one is hecking LONGGGG.

A note. Post-completion of this review, the author of Outbreak: The First Surge republished all existing chapters and made some changes. Keep this in mind throughout this assessment. I'm putting this up anyway (I only delayed it because I was waiting on Este to post her reviews, but she hasn't had time to finish any yet so I went ahead with this to stay on schedule), but some of my negative commentary may no longer be relevant, although I imagine my positive commentary will retain its weight. I am open to reviewing this story again later, but I'll wait until it has more chapters so that more of the plot is revealed—and besides the author may decide to make edits again, so it would only be fair to assess a much later draft if I did come back to this one.

I would also like to make note of the fact that Kiahoya very clearly cares about what her readers have to say, and often responds to them in the comments, which probably contributed to her decision to edit things. It honestly sucks when you pour your heart and soul into creating something only for people to point out everything wrong with it, even though you know you need that criticism, because you worked really hard and it can sometimes be painful to accept that what you ended up with isn't quite good enough yet. It's so humbling to see a writer that really cares about feedback from beta readers and takes it into account. She knows what's up, and she's going to grow exponentially as a writer. Y'all on this site could take some pointers from her.
