Looking back,

I saw my boots leave a trail

On the path enveloped by snow.

But I had to get the mail-

The one thing that mattered the most.

 The faint shimmer,

Of the lights worn by the trees

Showered me with hope.

Maybe this year, Maybe this time

Christmas would be rolled up in joy,

With bonfires, food and love.

 Watching the lanterns float up,

I also watched the snowflakes fall

 Numbing my cold body.

The carols were echoing around,

Trying to force me to stop and listen

But I focussed on the box that glistened-

Red and white and glowing with pure whiteness

Holding my happiness inside it.

 Opening the box,

I felt the familiar feeling cross,

I felt the familiar fading,

 Of my mind closing away...

For one last time on this white Christmas.

 My fingers shook,

 And my eyes were hooked.

But I knew I had to go...

Because my heart was freezing

All over again.

 I glanced one last time

At the letter box-

void and dark.

It'll be a Christmas without you,

And not even a letter from you,

As always... since the past five years.
