Fidelis' POV

I fell to my knees as a piercing scream cut through the air and reached my sensitive ears. It seemed as if I could not move, the scream had paralyzed me. I was paralyzed with a foreign feeling, a feeling I had only heard of but never personally encountered...I was paralyzed with fear.

I grunted as I used a lignum to help me stand. I am an alpha for goddess sake! I should not have been so effected by a scream and yet, here I was, crumbling underneath the amount of grief that this scream contained.

~We are affected because that scream comes from our mate, out love. She is in pain. We must go to her!~

All thoughts of pain seemed to drain from my mind as Lupus informed me of the reason behind this anguish and pain. Not only was I affected physically, but I could also feel the sadness coursing throughout my veins. How it was possible to feel what my mate was feeling without completing the mating, I'm not sure. I did know that I had to be there to ease her pain and so I ran. I ran to my beautiful mate and followed the pull.

I'm not sure how long I had been running for but I eventually arrived in front of the gates. I didn't stop to contemplate what my mate was doing withing his part of the territory, I just pushed the gates open and ran to her.

I stopped a few feet from her, observing everything. She sat in front of two sepulchrum lapidibus, her body convulsing with sobs, her figure slumped and broken-looking. My heart began to pulsate faster than normal as it had broken at the sight before me. Here was my mate, my comical, loving, curious mate, looking broken and defeated.

I was broken out of my trans when another sob rushed to my ears. I slowly, tentatively walked to my mate and bent down to pull her into my arms. Her cries worsened once I had touched her and he began to hit me as if I was the cause of her pain.

"NO! Leave me here. I want to die with them! I want to be with them! JUST LET ME DIE!" I cringed and growled at the thought of mate leaving my side both physically and spiritually.

"Never! You are my mate, my love, and I shall NEVER let you go for you are mine." I growled lowly in her ear. A shiver ran throughout her body and her sobs finally stopped. Her saddened eyes locked onto my blue ones and she whimpered.

"Fidelis...I never got the chance to meet them. I never got the chance..." She whispered as she buried her face into my chest. It all finally made sense...the former betas are-were her parents...and then my heart broke for her all over again.

I pulled her tightly to me and just held her there because I knew, nothing that I said could make it better. Nothing could ease the ache of losing a family member, no matter if you had known them or not. And so we stayed like that, her, curled up in my arms and I, holding her together tightly hoping that it would somehow mend her broken soul.

When the sky began to darken, the moon peeking from above the horizon, her breaths became even and shallow. Her slow heartbeat and soft snores reached my ears and I smiled sadly down at her. With a kiss upon her forehead, I gently put my arms underneath her sleeping figure and lifted her up, walking home slowly as to not wake her.

I took light steps towards the house as I just looked down at her, marveling at how even with a red nose and puffy eyes, she still was the most beautiful thing I had ever seen. I laid a kiss upon both her swollen eyelids and brushed a stray hair from her face. I looked up at the evening sky and sent out a silent prayer.

Moon Goddess, I beg of you, let my mate's anguish be carried upon my shoulders and let her pain be eased by the knowledge that I shall never leave her side willingly. Let her have peace of mind, that her kin is with you, enjoying their afterlives and watching over her. Let my prayers be heard.
