JAMES POTTER HAD BEEN AWARE of Autumn Rivers since their shared first year at Hogwarts, but he had never actually communicated with her until well into their third year. The two students had each other for their Care of Magical Creatures class, with the introduction of hippogriffs acting as the catalyst for their conversation.
The trio of James Potter, Sirius Black, and Peter Pettigrew were all stood together in their Care of Magical Creatures class, with Remus Lupin absent due to it being the night of the full moon. The three Gryffindor boys were behaving rather arrogantly, with their overconfidence causing them to underestimate the hippogriff they were going to interact with.
