After all, Johnny's generous offer to give me on-the-spot employment was really too good to be true given my current living situation. Getting paid to work around a bunch of books while trying to figure out what exactly my future holds didn't sound too bad to me. Beats the hell out of staying at mom and dad's 24/7.

Cinder Creek Books. Yeah. I'm okay with this... for now, at least. Way to be positive, Lucy. I was genuinely proud of myself for not having a complete mental breakdown by now given the atrocities I had faced in the past week alone.

It was truly hard to believe that no less than one short week ago, I had (quite regrettably) walked in on my then-boyfriend in bed with not just one, but two women.

Memories. I grimaced at the thought.

Walking up to the coffee shop—the one right next-door to Johnny's store—I felt more confident than I would have predicted, given our last encounter. I arrived before he did, sitting in a quiet, dimly lit corner booth and ordering an iced latte for myself.

Johnny arrived within minutes and ordered the same. He smiled across the table at me. "Thanks for meeting me, Luce." He shrugged off his flannel shirt to reveal a simple white v-neck tee shirt, the tight fabric complimenting his chest and biceps effortlessly, both visibly covered in various black-and-gray tattoos.
