Before our opening, Johnny, Dylan, and I knew we needed extra help at the bookstore, and Jess was nothing short of perfect for the job.

Jess had worked with Sage at her bar, Blue, as a fellow bartender for quite some time, but she was looking for opportunities to make a little extra money in the Falls as she herself had graduated recently and didn't want to live in her parents basement for the foreseeable future.

I already knew Jess in passing and knew her to be nothing but super friendly, and Sage had long seemed very fond of her as a coworker—often telling me stories from work involving Jess as her co-conspirator.

Jess was a striking beauty with shoulder-length, full-bodied, attention-stealing natural red hair and blue eyes. She had a few small visible fine-line tattoos on both of her arms, and rocked a serious nineties grunge look like it could never go out of style. Sixteen-year-old me would have taken one look at Jess and described her in one word: cool.

Men hit on Jess at the bar often—that was a simple fact I had come to realize through observation during spontaneous trips to visit Sage at work while Jess had also happened to be behind the bar at the same time.

For what it's worth, I knew through conversation with Sage that Jess was interested in both men and women, and often found the advances of most of the men at the bar to be both cringey and weird about 99% of the time. It might seem like a strange thing to talk about, but being so close with Sage, for so long, we had always talked about anything and everything.
