Johnny and I kept it very professional throughout the afternoon at work, though I did notice him staring at me more than a few times—and I couldn't say I hated the attention in the slightest.

It was a chilly Monday, albeit warm weather for the start of December, and the bookstore was hardly busy. We were, as usual, closed the following day of the week—so I was particularly excited when six o'clock finally rolled around. Closing time.

Having exactly zero plans for the evening, and only my parents to go home to, Jess and I were taking our time chatting at her desk as we gathered our things after the store had closed. We were finishing up our conversation as the very subject of our whispering—Johnny—walked through the door and began to approach us. My heart skipped a beat at the sight of him.

It was so easy to confide in Jess that I wound up telling her just a few details about what had been going on between the two of us shortly after it had transpired. She quite enjoyed the stories, to say the least.

"Do you two need anything back here?" Johnny asked, smiling at both of us.

Jess grinned at him, eyeing him up and down. "I mean, I could think of a few things."

I almost choked with stifled laughter. I shot her a look that read—really, Jess?

Jess grinned back at me, then winked at Johnny, squeezing my arm as she walked toward the front of the store, leaving the two of us alone.
