For once my heart beat nervously in my chest.

I kept biting my lip and sipping from the small cup of water I was given.

One of my hands was tightly wrapped in my mother's hands and in her lap.

I imagined I was soaking up strength.

My mom stared dead ahead, eyes fixed upon a certain spot of the wall.

"I love you, Mom," I said softly, voice cracking a little.

My mom closed her eyes briefly. "Yes, sweetie. I love you too. So much. You will get through it. You will."

And then a man in surgeon clothes entered the private waiting room we were in.

"Miss?" He said softly.

I stood up and my mom crushed me against her chest.

"I'll see you. I promise."

Promises.

My mom's promises.

Your promises.

My promises.

They all echoed in my head as I hospital gurney and they pricked my arm.

Putting me under.
