When he got home to Manchester he stayed in the old flat with his Aunt. His Uncle Nigel had died by that time and Aunt Pat had long ago let the room out where he and his Mum had slept. But Aunt Pat had a sofa in the front room and he slept there.
Ernie floated around, part-timing at several petrol shops before he found a garage that gave him steady work. There weren't enough cars stopped at the station to make a decent wage though, so he did some handyman work around the neighborhood.
A bit of fixing things: simple carpentry or plumbing and of course, he could get any motorcar running quick enough. The odd job helped him give Aunt Pat a few shillings and pay for his pint at the pub.
The first time the Gibbs sisters had driven their motorcar into the station, Ernie was leaning against the doorframe.
"Gorr'y," he whispered; almost swallowing the straw between his teeth.
