Chapter 19

-Emiko POV-

Kagami was trying to eat with his left hand...
But the broccoli slipped...
"Damn it!" shouted Kagami.

"Kagami, shut up already!" said Hygua.
"Uh, sorry about that" said Kagami.
"Broccoli is so slippery" said Kiyoshi.

"Do you really think that's the problem?" asked Hygua.
"What's he doing?" asked Koganei.
"He's practicing" I said.

"Practicing?" asked Kawahara.
"He's practicing using his left hand" I said.
But Kagami lost another piece of broccoli, which landed against my face before Nigo ate it.

"Damn you, Nigo!" shouted Kagami. "Give that back!"
Tetsuya tried to shush Nigo, who hid inside his bag again.
"By the way, what do you want to do tomorrow?" asked Kawahara. "We finally have the day off"

"Well, I'll probably sleep mostly" said Fukuda.
"H-Hey!" said Furihata and took out a flyer. "Why don't we do this?"
"Street basketball?" I said when I read the flyer.

"Hey, first years" said Riko. "Don't you know what a holiday is for? Rest, you have to rest"
"We know. We know, but..." said Furihata. "Kagami and Kuroko always get to play in games, and Maeda takes all the chores because she's the manager. But, well, we'd kind of like to play sometimes too..."

"Good! Good for you!" said Kiyoshi. "That's the spirit, first years! Right, Hyuga?"
"Y-Yeah" said Hyuga.
"Hey, Riko" said Kiyoshi. "Out of respect for that spirit, let's send them off right"

"Hey, wait. I..." said Riko.
"The first years really want to go" said Kiyoshi.
'Something tells me you want to go too...'

"Let them do it" he said.
"W-Well, just the first years then" said Riko.
"All right, I got her approval" said Kiyoshi. "Do your best, guys"
"Don't worry" I said. "I'll keep an eye on them"

The next day, my hunch was right.
Kiyoshi came with us...
"So, what are you doing here?!" shouted Kagami.

"What? I can't come too?" asked Kiyoshi.
"No, but... where's Kawahara?" asked Kagami.
"He's got a cold" said Fukuda.

"Who's going to play with us now?" asked Furihata.
"I could" I said and they all looked at me. "What? I was a manager for 3 years, I know a few things about basketball. I might not be as good as the rest of you, but I can play a little"
"I'll play" said Kiyoshi. "Let's have some fun"

We went to register, but I recognised the team next to us.
They stared at us and we stared back.
"Seiho?" we said.
"Seirin?" they said at the same time.

"What a coincidence" said Kasuga. "Anyway, what are you doing here? What about practice?"
"We have the day off" said Tetsuya.
"You can play already?" asked Iwamura to Kiyoshi.

"Well, yeah. A little" said Kiyoshi. "Our manager is quite strict when it comes to our health"
"Of course I am" I said. "You would all be dead if I wasn't there"
"What about you? Shouldn't you be practicing?" asked Kagami who was stuffing his face full.

"Huh? Are you trying to pick a fight?!" shouted Tsugawa.
"What?" said Kagami.
"Kagami, listen..." said Kiyoshi.

"Ignore Tsugawa. The third years are retiring" said Iwamura.
"What? You're not going to be in the Winter Cup?" asked Kagami.
"You mean you don't know?" asked Kasuga. "Only the top eight teams from the Inter-High can participate in the Winter Cup prelims"

"In other words, only the first and second place teams from the Inter-High. From our block, that's just Seirin and Shutoku" said Iwamura.
"Which means because we lost to Seirin, we're automatically disqualified" said Kasuga. "We're taking a break from studying for exams today"

"If we play each other today, we can play the game we missed last year" said Iwamura.
"Don't play too hard" said Kiyoshi.
"People don't forget that easily" said Kasuga. "I wish this coincidence could've happened while we were still smouldering"

"Yeah, seriously!" shouted Tsugawa.
"I'm disappointed that Hyuga and the others are missing" said Iwamura who grabbed Tsugawa by his shirt. "But we'll have our revenge, so we can focus on our exams without reservations"
They walked away and we were all smiling.
