Concept work has always served as important to me because I'm not the most 'visual' writer - that is, I don't spend too much time on setting unless I need to point out something vital. This is something I'm looking to improve as time goes on. And, if you're reading this, please do be the judge of that!
It's important to me to have an image of a character/setting/scene in general when I'm writing a chapter of any work and below are some of the pieces that I have been using to base each new chapter of Callisto around. A lot of these don't only help with physical setting, but atmosphere - which is something I do focus a lot on. The world of the Deadlands wouldn't be what it is without help from these works.
Below you'll find some images that serve these purposes for me. Usually when writing a chapter I collate some of these and write around them. Other times I do the same thing but during editing. Maybe you'll find some of these useful in your own writing. Or, maybe you have a similar process yourself? If so leave a comment because I love sharing how we all work on this community.
Vulture's Cry - a key inspiration for Rain-Born's visual aesthetic and attitude (from the video game series 'Wasteland' - some very strong story arcs in that game)
Alternate take on the Swamp of Many-Eyes. I went with a more morose image for 'The Swamp' chapter heading but this one gives a nice feeling of pestilence and poison. Ultimately I thought the image in chapter five fit with the overall tone of the story better but the rotting trees here are a nice touch.
The fabled Iron Forest of the Deadlands - the place where Callisto waits.
A black-eyed dragon delivers its charges to a remote mountain of the Deadlands. Their mission: classified.
Night descends over the Iron forest. Amidst the ruins, who knows what awaits those who journey to find the treasure held within?
The Canyon on Evil Spirits: The great divide between the Hanakh and Guthra tribes of the western Deadlands. Within its depths, the canyon crawlers wait.
