black candles

Inside the intimate, little chapel
resonates the choir.
white roses line the aisle,
fancy small talks and awkward smiles.
Bridesmaids in pastel dresses,
groomsmen fidget in their tuxes.
The wedding bells sing,
starting a monumental gathering.

But beneath the Sycamore tree out back,
you stood distraught, screwing up your vows.
Unconsciously glancing at your father's wrist watch.
You once told me how it is unmatched,
Your prized possession.
Though, your bride had a different opinion.
She looked at it and saw an old trinket.
A thing of the past that should have no more business being in your present
—especially today.

But my darling, if we were to talk in honest tongues,
I know exactly why you're delaying.
If this is something you have always wanted,
why are you suddenly second-guessing?
If she is who you choose,
Why are you still thinking about the girl
you had to lose?

How could you ever be truly happy,
when you're about to promise her a heart
that always belonged
to me?

Rest assured, I won't give her much reason to fret,
I am never one to do anything that I'll regret.
Before they even ask for objections,
I promise, I will be long gone.

Maybe I'm always meant to be alone.
And you were always meant to be lonesome.

But by the time the ceremony ends,
before you leave the chapel,
in an ocean of white,
you happen to see a black candle,

Remember that it's not only for you,
so much as it is for me.
But mostly it's for the greatest love
that could never be.
