Chapter 42 – An Abrupt Reversal

Nathaniel had sensed something was wrong when the price was added to 10 million.

“Mother, stop raising the price. It’s dangerous.”

He tried to stop her.

Winifred knew he was right.

Although they were rich, spending 31 million to buy a necklace was outrageous.

Quintina disagreed.

“No, we must have it. Orville wants to give it to Janet. Why does she have all the good things? We can’t allow that to happen.”

Winifred was persuaded.

She couldn’t lose to Janet!

“What are you afraid of? I don’t believe that handsome boy dares to increase the price!”

They couldn’t be humiliated.

Winifred looked at Orville provocatively.

Orville pretended to be hesitated and raised the number plate unwillingly.

“Thirty-two million!”

Only one million!

Winifred was excited. She felt she had won already.

Nathaniel knew something was wrong, “Stop! Give it to them.”

“Brother!”

“You are too kind. We can’t let them have it. Even if we do, it must cost them a lot of money.”

She was too stup*d to see through this.

Nathaniel was angry, “Mother, if you insist on bidding, I won’t stop you again. But you must pay for it yourself.”

Winifred hesitated.

“Great! It’s within my budget. I will help you wear it later. You will look amazing.”

Orville seemed very happy.

Janet knew what he was doing. She smiled and said, “I’m so excited.”

Everyone was in an uproar.

“I didn’t know Southey Group was so wealthy.”

“Webster Group is going to lose. It’s just so-so.”

“If Janet is sitting by my side, I will buy her a necklace too, no matter how much it costs.”

Winifred was annoyed. She couldn’t lose to Janet.

Quintina whispered in her ear, “Mom, Orville is obsessed with that b*tch. If we can make him lose a bunch of money, he will

hate her.”

Winifred raised her number plate again.

“Forty million!”

“Forty million?!”

“Will the gentleman in booth 5 follow up?”

Nathaniel gave up.

People started to talk again.

“Mrs. Webster is amazing!”

“Only she deserves to wear such necklace.”

“I’m curious if Orville will follow up.”

Winifred turned to look at Orville.

He still looked relaxed and even smiled at her. Winifred panicked.

She didn’t mean to buy it. She was trying to trap him.

She wanted to give up!

“Janet, I overestimated your charm. Orville doesn’t care about you as much as he shows. He doesn’t even buy you a necklace.”

She tried to stimulate Janet and Orville to keep bidding. But they saw her through.

Orville shook his head regretfully.

“Since you like this necklace so much, it will be too rude if I keep bidding!”

“I lose. It’s yours.”

Ernest cheered silently for him, “Well done!”

Janet laughed too.

Winifred was furious, “You!”

Pointing at Orville, she was too angry to speak.

Orville made a sad face, as if he was about to cry.

“I want to buy the necklace for Janet, but I can’t afford it. I’m so sad.”

“You! You did it on purpose! You were competing maliciously!!”

Quintina finally realized they were fooled.

She was so stup*d!

However, the auctioneer would not give them a chance to regret it.

“Forty million once!”

“Forty million twice!”

“Forty million three times!”

“Deal!”

Accompanied by the sound of the small wooden hammer falling, Winifred only felt a thunder explode in her mind.

“Son, they framed your mother…”

Winifred fell onto the floor.
