He changed the song again, and after the first few lines, he pulled his hand back, letting it run. ‘On The Road’ by Keane.
Spontaneously it seemed, that morning, he’d woken me up and told me to get dressed; we were going somewhere special.
Where? I still had no clue.
So when the sun is coming up and you go
And there's still so many things you don't know
Don't you look back, I've no doubt that I
Will see you on the road
When the world's laying you low
Why don't you let me carry your load?
When things get bad you know you have a friend
All along the road
I grinned.
“What’s so funny?” he asked, taking his eyes off the road to peer at me through his sunglasses.
“Nice song,” I replied, enjoying the feel of the wind in my hair.
“I know. That’s why I let it play,” he said, still looking at me.
“Watch the road, Fitch,” I murmured, looking away.
“Don’t tell me what to do,” he joked.
I raised a brow, “If you die, who else is going to carry my load?” I retorted, making reference to the song as it reached the final chorus.
He laughed, rolling his eyes, “Fine. Change the song.”
“To?”
“Anything. Surprise me,” he replied, as we stopped at the lights.
There was something about being in a Ferrari in New York with the top down and the light wind blowing through your hair. It really did something to my spirits; I felt lighter somehow.
Trey had left his for us to use; now, he could probably afford to get himself twenty more. And then some.
I shuffled through his music and stopped on ‘Cruise’ by Florida Georgia Line.
Baby you a song
You make me wanna roll my windows down and cruise
Down a back road blowin’ stop signs through the middle
Every little farm town with you
In this brand new Chevy with a lift kit
Would look a hell of a lot better with you up in it
So baby you a song
You make me wanna roll my windows down and cruise
He grinned, “I’ve already got you.”
“Yeah, but still,” I shrugged.
“We should have a song; one just for us,” he said as we started to move again.
“Why?”
“Are you asking because you actually want to know or because you think it’s cheesy?” he asked.
