{ Chapter 30 } : Sink by night, emerge by dawn

The door to the front entrance creaked open at the same time as my feet descended the staircase.

I paused at the last step. Sam dropped a duffel bag containing his football gear and took a deep breath, leaning his frame languidly against the closed door as he took off his shoes.

The creases in his forehead slowly inched away as his green eyes rose to meet mine - his exhausted but lighting up with a hint of playfulness upon seeing me, mine a little bit more shy and timid.

"Hey." I smiled, descending the last steps.

"Hey, baby," he mirrored right back, then caught himself, doing a quick scan with his eyes to make sure my mom or Michael weren't in earshot.

Over the last two days, I contemplated telling my mom about me and Sam, but I didn't know if that thought would put her at ease. Mom's wasn't opposed to me dating, but after the whole fiasco with Joey, she was wary of who I brought home. This time the guy I would be "bringing" home already resided in our home and I didn't know how she'd react. Would she think it was inappropriate because he was living under our roof? Or would she be okay with it since she thought so highly of him?

I watched with mixed emotions as Sam produced a crumpled brown envelope from his back jeans pocket and deposited it lightly on the entrance table. It was this week's rent – I knew it. Mom explained mildly that he was insistent on paying the rent even though she told him it wasn't necessary. I didn't like it either. But our family could use the extra hand. Two weeks ago, Mom refused his money and he went out and brought an entire month's worth of grocery. Our cabinets were overflowing and I'd never felt more grateful or indebted to him.

Between her finishing paying off the last of the mortgage and me getting back my old job and hence having less time for Michael, it would be a plaguing thought that I don't think she'd appreciate.

"You hungry?" I stepped closer to him and he curved an arm around my waist, veering me in. "How was practice?"

"The usual drills. The usual drama. Coach lost his cool on a couple of guys, including Joshua. Sometimes I just want to quit and get it over with."

Samuel told me last night he only played football for two reasons. First, because his mom had always wanted him too. Second, because he realized he was spectacularly bestowed in said sport, the cocky ass. He had no plans of pursuing it in college, unlike his fighting...

"You want dinner?" I asked to change the subject. "My mom's not home so there's not much on the menu. I'm lazy so I'm just going to fix you and Michael some grilled-cheeses and spicy potato wedges."

"Depends. Are you on the menu?" he grinned cheekily.

I combed my fingers through his sweaty hair, dragging it away from his skull, laughing at his not-so subdued request. The smile lit his eyes at the tender gesture and it was a damn beautiful sight, seeing his pearly white teeth and that dimple flash. "You need to get your mind out of the gutter, baby. Maybe even fix yourself a shower. You stink so bad."
