Chapter 7

"You're positive that was dart?" Lucas asks for like the 100th time as we walk down some old train tracks. Me being the goofball I am I decide I should try to balance on one of the tracks, like I'm on a tightrope or something. Max looks at me as I slip backward onto my ass
"You Okay?" She asks a worried tone in her voice as she helps me up.
"Yeah" I reply before grabbing her hand and standing on the track again. "Help me.please?"
She smiles at me and holds onto my hand as I balance using her to steady myself when I'm about to fall.

"I said are you sure that was dart?!" Lucas yells when no one answers him
"Yes, He had the same exact yellow pattern on his butt"
"Wait you're looking at this dog things butt, dude" I laugh at Dustin when he glares at me
"He was tiny two days ago" max states
"Well, He molted three times already"
"Malted?" Steve questions
"Molted" Dustin reply's "shed his skin to make room for growth like hornworms"
"Nerd!" I laugh
"Y/n, stop" max says letting go of my hand and walking Ahead of me. I get off the side and jog to catch up with them.
"Max..." she ignores me "Maxine"
"When's he gonna molt again?"
"It's gonna be soon" Dustin look back at max for a second "when he does, he'll be fully grown, or close to it. And so will his friends"
"Yeah and he's gonna eat a lot more than just cats" Steve states
"Wait, a cat?" Lucas blocks Dustin's path "dart ate a cat?"
"No,what? No"
"What are you talking about? He ate Mews" I say seriously
"Mews? Who's Mews?" Max finally looks at me
"It's Dustin's cat" Steve cuts in
"Steve! Y/n!"
"I knew it! You kept him!" Lucas shoves Dustin
"Don't touch him!" I growl making max look at me
"Y/n stop!" She yells. What the Jesus am I doing to make her yell at me?!
"No!" Dustin pays attention to Lucas "no. No I...no, I...he missed me. He wanted to come home"
"Bullshit!"
"I didn't know he was a demogorgon okay?"
"Oh, so now you admit it?"
"Guys, who cares? We have to go" I say looking at them seriously
"I care! Oh put the party at jeopardy! You broke the rule of law!"
"So did you!" Dustin yells back
"What?"
"You told a stranger the truth!" Dustin says shining a flashlight really close to Max's face. I step forward and warn him which earns me a slight push so she's in front "a stranger?" She scoffs

I look at Steve who's trying not to get involved. I walk over to him and wrap him in my arms. Which makes his hug me back and kiss my forehead "keep trying kid. She's realised how amazing you are, I promise" he whispers at me while patting my head. Over the past couple of weeks I would call steve almost every night telling him about my day. I told him that if I didn't call I'd be hanging out with max (which was a lot of the time) but other than that I called him all the time and we became really close. Steve's kindness and funniness is how I have been surviving with all this craziness going on.
"Hey steve?" I say wincing when I put too much pressure on my right leg
"Yeah y/n/n?"
"My leg really hurts" I say lifting my jean leg up slightly to reveal red liquid running down it slowly. I push the pant leg down quickly before looking at the others pretending like nothing happened

Lucas, Dustin and max keep arguing wile steve and I lift our heads when we hear screeching in the distance. We start to walk slowly towards it "hey guys?" Steve speaks
"Guys!" I yell making them jump and turn. The sound continues. Steve starts to walk off and Dustin and Lucas tun after him leaving max and I alone.
"No,no,no. Hey guys, why are you headed towards the sound? Hello? Hello? Shit" max says from beside me before looking towards me and than up at the boys. She starts to walk off and I follow grabbing her hand and pulling her away from everyone slight before speaking
"why are you angry at me?"
"I'm not angry"
"You've been ignoring me and yelling at me" I state making her face soften
"I'm sorry. I'm just stressed and the whole thing with the dog this on the roof. It scared me y/n. I've never been this scared before. I'm sorry. And thank you for saving me"
"N-no worries" I say feeling slightly light headed. I ignore it and keep walking/ limping towards where we're going
"I'll catch up in a minute max. Just go ahead"
"No" she says simply
"Max"
"Y/n"
"Go"
"No"
"Fine have it your way" I say sitting down against A tree and lifting my pant leg to reveal a bite mark along calve.
"Shit" I breathed out. Biting my lip to stop the tears from falling. Blood drips out of the wound. Max stares at the bite and me in shock, not knowing what to do at this very moment. "Steve!" She almost screams. I launch forward and tackle her to the ground, when we land our faces are inches part and I can feel her warm breath on my lips. I cover her mouth and lean down to her hear
"he can't know. He'll make me go home. He can't know Maxine" I say seriously before getting up and helping her up. Max lets me lean on her for support as I limp towards Steve and the rest of the small group. We look down on a large forest area.
"I don't see him" Dustin states
"All I see is tress" lucas adds
"That all any of us can see, dingus" I say looking over at him
He lifts him binoculars "it's the lab" he states
"they were going back home" I state
