Amelia could feel Meredith staring into her soul and she knew the woman was waiting for an explanation. You don't just drop a bomb like that and not explain the whole story. Amelia Shepherd did like to live a pretty private life so no one knew about her biological daughter... except for a few people.

"Derek knew," Amelia said in a rushed tone.
"Derek knew?" Meredith asked as she repeated her sister's words.
"Yeah. Derek and Addison helped me. They helped me find the perfect family for the baby," Amelia told her.
"The Callahans?" Meredith asked.
"Yeah, I never forgot the father's name, Carson Callahan," Amelia stated. Then she said,
"I never knew my little girl's name though. They hadn't picked a name out for her the last time I saw her," Amelia explained.
"Did you get to hold her?" Meredith asked. Amelia nodded with a sad smile and a tear escaped her eye.
"I wasn't supposed to though," Amelia said before sniffling.
Meredith gave her a confused look so Amelia added,
"The Callahans were supposed to get her right after she was born. I was fine not holding her because I knew if I held her I wouldn't want to let go. Anyways, Carson insisted that I hold her so I did and when I had to let go..." Amelia trailed off and Meredith could see the pain and heartbreak all over Amelia's face.
"And how do you feel right now?" Meredith asked, trying to gauge the woman's reaction. Amelia smiled briefly before her saying,
"I feel like I need a meeting. I haven't seen my daughter in fifteen years and now she shows up in our ER. I mean what are the chances of that happening?" Amelia asked rhetorically.
Then she looked to Meredith, who was still waiting for the full story.

"As you know, I'm an addict. I go to meetings and I've been clean for a while. Anyways, about sixteen years ago, a drug related friend of mine visited me and we ended up sleeping together... multiple times. We were both clean so it's not like we were high or drunk or anything, but after he left, I found out I was pregnant," Amelia finally explained.
"So, you didn't tell him about the baby?" Meredith asked.
"Nope, I haven't seen the guy since," Amelia said with a guilty look.

Meredith just gave her a look so Amelia started to defend her decision with,
"I knew I wasn't going to keep her, so why bother dragging him into it? He wasn't father material and I wasn't ready to be a mom."

Amelia was getting all antsy and Meredith could tell she was nervous about having to face Scarlett again.

"So, are you gonna tell her?" Meredith asked.
"What? No, why would I do that?" Amelia asked quickly.
"Because she's your kid. She's a mini you," Meredith told her with a smile on her face. She still couldn't believe Amelia had a teenage daughter.
"You have no idea," Amelia said with a scoff.
"Apparently she's a drug addict," Amelia told her.
"All the more reason to tell her who you are so you can help her. She just lost her dad and her step mother-"
"Is probably just going to send her away to rehab because she's an addict," Amelia finished Meredith sentence.
"Exactly. Do you want to let your daughter get sent away again?" Meredith asked.
Amelia looked into her eyes and knew Meredith was right.
"Let's go. I want to meet my niece," Meredith said with a smile.

The two made their way back out to the waiting room. Scarlett was no longer there and Sam was talking to Maggie about Carson. Amelia and Meredith walked over to the two and asked,
"Where's Scarlett?"
"I sent her home. Couldn't stand to look at her anymore," Sam said in a rude tone.
"She drives?" Amelia asked even though she knew the answer.
"I told her to take a cab," Sam clarified.
"How long ago did she leave?" Meredith asked quickly.
"Like a minute or so," Sam said. Then she asked back,
"What's with all the questions?"

Amelia instantly took off for the main entrance and Meredith followed her without an explanation. Scarlett was sitting on the bench waiting for a taxi. She was on the phone with someone. Amelia sighed when she saw the girl was still there. She walked up to Scarlett and Meredith stayed near the entrance and watched.
