Chapter 32: Nothing

Holding onto Violet, whose body heat only continued to rise drastically, Michaelis stood paralyzed in shock. No thoughts ran through his mind as he stood there, petrified, unknown what to do.

He knew that she wasn't dead, but her unconscious and limp body only made him remember the scene of that night.

His heart stopped and then started to beat rapidly, to the point it resulted in excruciating pain. However, he felt numb throughout his whole body, as his lungs felt like it was constricting tightly. As if someone was choking him, he couldn't even let out a sound.

However, he suddenly felt a static shock that brought him back to reality.

It stung, but it stopped the numbness he felt at the sight of her limp body.

Looking closely, it was repeating.

Coming from her body, he saw how black electricity seemed to spark when he made contact with her. It only began to spark more and more as he waited.

He knew what he had to do before it got any worse.

The courtyard wasn't any place for her to rest. He had to take her to her room quickly before this phenomenon became any worse.

Breathing in, slightly wincing from the pain already building up from the electricity, he picked Violet up in a princess carry. Despite his short stature, he was easily able to carry Violet, who was slightly taller than him.

His Animalia genes allowed him to have the same strength as a regular adult man, even though he had a child's body. Most Animalia had this trait. However, many magicians can strengthen their bodies with magic, so it wasn't seen as anything special to the humans of this country.

Quickly carrying her, while avoiding any servants that may be in the halls, the electricity continued to become more intense. However, he didn't want to let her go, even if the pain only worsened. He promised that he wouldn't, to himself, and he wasn't planning to stop then.

As he finally arrived at her room, he put her down on the bed, gently. His arms ached from the onslaught of sparks, but he didn't pay any mind to it, he's gone through worse pains than this.

As his mind finally settled, he calmly thought about what to do. Thinking of everything, he realized there's most likely one reason for this.

His Lady could use dark magic.

Despite never having come in contact with this before, there was one reason that he knew.

It was the reaction he had when he was carrying Violet.

Not many people know why, but Animalias have an extreme reaction to dark magic. It could be black flames or even the black electricity from before. There are always signs when they come into contact with each other.

It was because of these symptoms that there was a time when the kingdom used to keep Animalia people captive. They would use them to test if a person was a dark magic user. It was cruel, as many Animalia were treated inhumanely. There were even times when an Animalia would be severely injured due to the power of the dark magic user. It was a witch-hunt at the expense of the Animalia people.

However, this has since been abolished. Though, the prejudice they faced during those times still hadn't faded.

There aren't many theories about why this phenomenon exists. Some say it's due to the ancient war between the Demons and the rest of the world. Although many participated in it, it was the Animalia that took the brunt of the casualties. This caused the theory that it was because of how badly they were hurt that their descendants can't be near one another. Others say that it's because Animalias aren't naturally gifted with magic, though there are exceptions every few generations. Michaelis was one of them, and also extremely talented in that department, which was why he was picked up by the Duke. There were many other theories as well.
