MIGUEL SIGHED AS he stood in the bathroom, looking at his eye. It was purple and swollen with a bruise so large that it almost took up the entire left side of his face. The night before at the country club after Ali had kissed him, Johnny had ended up punching him in the face. It had caused a huge commotion. Ali started screaming at him, people were stepping back and gasping out of fear and confusion. As much as he wanted to, Miguel didn't fight back. It didn't matter if he wanted to or not, Johnny wasn't even giving him the chance to fight back. He just kept coming at him, leaving him no room to hit back. It wasn't until Ali's father had stepped in that the fight stopped. Miguel already knew that Johnny had taken a disliking towards him, but after seeing Ali kiss him, he hated him even more. The black eye was proof of that. But, Miguel didn't seem to care what Johnny thought.

Sure, Johnny was his future Sensei and they got along well in the future, but that didn't seem important to Miguel. What he was really worried about was Daniel. He had been Daniel's number one advocate when it came to him and Ali. Now, Daniel was under the assumption that he had betrayed him. Between Daniel running out of the ballroom so fast and Johnny starting a fight, Miguel hadn't had the chance to explain. It seemed like he was never going to get the chance either. Daniel seemed to be going out of his way to avoid him. Every single time he saw Miguel, he turned the other way. Miguel had even tried calling his name to get his attention, but Daniel didn't turn around. He wanted Daniel to understand that he wouldn't come between him and Ali, especially not when he was the one who had been encouraging him the whole time.

Things with Johnny weren't getting any easier either. Every time Johnny saw him, the anger that he saw that night at the country club came back. He just knew that Johnny wanted to punch him in the face again, so he avoided him at all costs. It was proving to be a lot harder than he thought it would. Johnny seemed to be everywhere. Miguel couldn't seem to catch a break. Johnny never confronted him though, no matter how much it looked like he wanted to. It was like he was holding back—like he was just waiting for the right moment to strike. He was a like a cobra, stalking its prey and watching its every move just waiting until Miguel was at his most vulnerable before he attacked. Miguel feared that at any moment, Johnny and his buddies would corner him and he would have no other choice but to fight back.

That wasn't what scared him the most. What Miguel feared more than anything was the fact that he saw Johnny and Daniel talking one day. Miguel watched them from afar, trying to figure out what they could possibly be talking about. For once, Johnny didn't look like he wanted to beat the crap out of Daniel and Daniel didn't look afraid of him. What was even more terrifying was the fact that before Johnny walked away, they shook hands as if they were in agreement about something. Miguel's heart began to pound against his chest as his mind started to run a thousand miles a minute. Whatever the reason for them talking so civilly and shaking hands, Miguel knew that it couldn't have been good.

Johnny and Daniel had been unaware that Miguel had been watching them talk. It was Johnny who had actually wanted to talk to Daniel. Daniel had been wary at first and had debated not meeting him after school like he asked, but ultimately decided to hear him out. What was the worst thing that could happen? It turns out, nothing bad happened at all. Johnny actually wanted to have a civil conversation with him.

"Look, I'm not here to fight with you, all right man?" Johnny said to him. "I just wanna talk."

Daniel was still on edge at this point. "About what?"

"About that Miguel guy," Johnny told him. "About him and Ali."

"What about him and Ali?" Daniel asked, not really wanting to think about either one of them.

"Ali likes him," Johnny said. "Anyone could have seen that, but when they kissed last night it became even more clear."

"Yeah, don't remind me," Daniel said, folding his arms across his chest.
