When hiding a character's past, you have the ability to use it for something more important later on. For example, if your character has a sort of mystery power which is typically unexplainable, you can use the guardians or parents in order to reveal why it's happening. You can build up mystery and tension by slowly revealing chips of the characters past among the novel itself.Lies:
Every character will eventually lie one way or another. This is especially with protagonists and their feelings towards other characters. They may believe lying is the best way to protect them. You can add miny character flaws to showcase this, like if the lie is brought up without intention, they would quickly and nervously switch the topic.
