How to write a manipulative character

The most common aspect of a manipulative person is them being extremely nice to your face. They'll go out of their way to shower you in constant compliments in order to get you to do their bidding.

Generally, manipulative characters will try to be the best friend you've ever had. That is if you're useful to them. If they feel like you're no longer of use to them, they'll treat you as if you never existed or as an enemy.

Make sure to carefully plan out your character. Do they have a hidden agenda? What's their main goal?

Slowly chip away at their real personality throughout the story. Don't showcase what they do on chance, but instead consider that there may be an underlying reason for doing whatever they do. (until proven otherwise)

When the constant compliments and flattery doesn't work on a person, the manipulator will turn that into bullying or guilt-tripping. Instead of treating you like an absolute king, they'll treat you like you spawned into the world from the depths of hell. They'll chew on you, spit on you, throw you in the trash, and stomp on you.
