we got ready and headed to a nearby store.

"i'll get some crisps," simon said, walking away.

i, american, laughed under my breath, "crisps my ass," i wandered around getting drinks as well as cookies.

"excuse me miss?" asked an old lady near by.

"oh, hello!" i replied, trying to be polite.

"will you be a dear and help me reach the milk?"

"of course!"
i reached up and placed it in her basket.

"thank you lovely!"

"you're welcome!" i started walking away when she called me again. "yes?"

"is that your boyfriend?" she asked, pointing at simon, who was looking really, really excited about the "crisps".

"oh no no no! he's a very close friend," i replied, not knowing a flush of color was beginning to appear on my pale cheeks.

"that's what i said about howard, and we ended up getting married and having kids! listen, if you're blushing just by me asking if you guys are dating, it must mean something right?"

"i guess so, i mean he's a really close friend."

"anyways, have a great day, and make sure to try somehow meeting me again and telling me the news," she winked.

at that point, simon was walking towards me and this old lady.

"what were you guys talking about?" he asked.

"nothing!" i quickly replied, maybe a little bit too quickly. the old lady chuckled softly behind me.

"okay?" simon said, clearly confused.

"i was just thanking her for giving me the milk, but i'll be going now!" the lady smiled, saving my ass.

we said goodbye to the lady and started walking to the car.

it was silent. an awkward silence, for once, and i was left alone with my thoughts.
