The Nail

Oh you fell for it again,
Letting something so near
to your heart, with the sharp end.
You can't blame it.
That's how it was designed.
Sharp and narrow,
Hard and painful.
Sinking in a little at a time.
Deeper and deeper,
Until you're finally in
All the way, to the head.
Your presence required
To hold something together.
Strengthening the bond
Every time you're said.
While you remain fast
Where you were laid,
The thing seems complete.
So when you are ripped
From your space,
you leave a hole,
And the thing falls apart.
It can be filled in,
Or it can be covered over,
You can be put back in place,
But where two once joined,
Will never be the same.
