Chapter XXIII

The usually quaint Palace, wasn't so quiet and peaceful today

How could it be? This was the celebration of the year, the Empire's, Princess Royale ('Royale' is a title given to the Queen's daughter)

Inside the palace walls, countless men and women could be seen chattering amongst themselves well taking occasional sips of fine wine

From Dukes and Earls to neighbouring princess's and prince's, only the most upper class were invited to this prestigious event

The extravagant gowns and jewels that they wore, practically screamed: "I'm rich and wealthy!"

But although everyone seemed well and joyful, the words they spread weren't nearly as sweet as their faces

[ "So, do you really think the Princess's face is disfigured?" ]

[ "Of course it is! Why else would she not show her face around? Even at the fifth princess's ball, her face was completely covered" ]

[ "To think that the Empress of our proud nation is actually a simple commoner! How shameful for the royal family!" ]

[ "But have you not seen that woman's beauty? It's hard to believe that such an unbelievably gorgeous face, is but a little commoner girl!" ]

[ "Hmph, of course, she is! Have you ever heard of the family name 'Adley' in the list of noble houses? My guess is she's a dirty lady of a brothel" ]

[ "Of course! She must have used her beauty to blind our great Emperor! A scheming, low-class vixen is what she must be!" ]

A loud trumpet interrupted the people's conversations

[ "Now entering, his royal highness the Emperor and daughter, Princess Cadence Lyn De Blanche Romania" ]

The unnecessarily large doors were opened, revealing the unbelievably stunning duo of Father and Daughter 

Gasps and loud breathes could be heard all around the hall

As usual, the Emperor looked as cold and icy as ever, that was not what shocked the people

Large, gem-like eyes with dark, thick eyelashes. Curled golden hair that looked soft as silk. A milky white complexion and soft rosy lips. That blank yet captivating expression!

The princess wasn't just good looking, her beauty was unbelievably exquisite! Dazzling! Divine even!

Although she was still young, the people could only imagine how great her beauty will become!

At this moment they all held the same thought: "who was it that said the princess looked like a monster?! what nonsense if she is a monster then what may we be?!"

Hand, in hand the Princess and Emperor gracefully descended the grand staircase

This again shocked the people

[ "T-the Emperor is holding hands with the princess!" ]

[ "Impossible! Our ruler has never been such a familiar person even to his own blood!" ]

[ "A-am I hallucinating? The Emperor rarely even makes an appearance to the prince's events, let alone escort this peasant born princess!" ]

Klaus who had heard this immediately drew his attention to the idiotic noblewomen who had spouted those last words

His expression didn't change, but the ice and intimidation in his eyes grew tremendously!

The Earl's wife could feel herself shaking in her shoes, as he stared her down

[ "Cover Cadence's eyes and ears" ]

Klaus whispered to his shadow guard, who complied immediately

Cadence was confused but didn't go against it after Klaus told her to sit still for a bit

[ "Lowly Princess? Hahahaha" ]

His loud laugh sent chills down the spines of everyone present

[ "You are the one who is lowly. A simple Earl's wife. Who do you think you are to disrespect my kin? Those who do not know their place should be rid of" ]

At this point the women couldn't hold on any longer as she fell to her knees, a cold sweat covering her entire body

She wanted to desperately beg for mercy, but the words seemed to be stuck in her throat

[ "Strip her husband and family of their title and kick them out of the kingdom. If they come back to kill them. As for that women go feed her to the dogs" ]

The guards nodded and proceeded to drag the women and her entire family to their doom

All that could be heard, were the chilling screams and cries until they were too far away

The entire hall was silent and the atmosphere was tense

[ "Continue the party" ]

Klaus ordered

Who would dare go against the Emperor especially after the events that just occurred right in front of their eyes?

They knew the Emperor was indeed ruthless, but to see him in action like that was even more frightening than they had imagined 

Thus their moods took a 180 turn as they continuously began to flatter and praise the princess with joyful smiles plastered on

At this point, Cadence's sight and a hearing was returned and although she was confused by the change, she didn't question it much

The nobles were all two-faced people who thought only for their benefit and she was well aware of that

But somehow she could feel things were the slightest bit off...

"Well whatever must just be my butterflies," she thought as she shrugged the feeling off

And so the party continued just like that
