Casablanca Tunnel

There's nothing scarier than enduring Casablanca Tunnel's rush hour traffic during the day. But when midnight strikes, there's something far scarier about it. As you trace back to the 80s, before this prominent and well-connected tunnel was built, you would find that the land was once Menteng Pulo Cemetery. The mishandling of the corpse while relocating them to build this eight-meter long underpass is said to have angered the spirits and thus, the hauntings began. One of the most well-know ghost-sightings is the "lady in red", whose shadow often appears and causes accidents in the middle of the night as it seeks revenge. According to the urban legends, to avoid any form of hauntings drivers are recommended to honk three times before entering the tunnel or even when passing by the newly built flyover.

Lubang Buaya

Known as Crocodile's Pit in English, Lubang Buaya is a museum built to memorialize a bloody history that took place in 1965. This is the sight where seven Army Generals were brutally murdered by the Communist Party during a military overtake led by President Soekarno's coup. In the museum, you could find wax-life sized dummies re-enacting how the Generals were slaughtered to their deaths. Their bodies were then mutilated and thrown into a small well that sits in the middle of the vicinity. Till today, it has been said that the cries and footsteps of these restless spirits can be heard at nights.

Pondok Indah House

Found in the elite neighborhood of Pondok Indah in South Jakarta is one of the city's most infamous haunted houses. The luxurious home, which has inspired several horror clips, comes with a tale of terror involving a family of seven that was brutally murdered by a group of robbers. It is said that the souls of the family remain in the vicinity haunting those who visit or attempt to stay. There have been many cases of strange sightings and stories involving the house and missing people with the last one being a fried rice vendor who allegedly entered the house and never came back out, leaving his cart behind.

Jeruk Purut Cemetery

Obviously cemeteries are considered a prime haunting spot, but Jeruk Purut Cemetery is one of the oldest cemeteries truly famous for its haunting stories. One of the most popular ghost sightings is a decapitated Dutch priest who carries his own head around in his hand and is often accompanied by a large black dog. If you're up for the challenge to spot him, it is said that you have to visit the cemetery on Fridays alone or with an odd-numbered group of people at midnight and walk around the place seven times.

Bintaro Railway and Manggarai Station

On one ill-fated Monday morning in 1987, two trains collided head-on in Bintaro, South Jakarta leaving more than 100 people dead. This unfortunate event is considered as one of the nation's most devastating transportation accidents. Now the area has become infamous for its hauntings. On top of ghost sightings, many locals have witnessed empty trains without passengers passing by while the station was closed at night.

Ancol Bridge

This popular recreational area is also known for its frightening horror stories. One of the most locally recognized stories is said to be the spirit of a young beautiful woman who haunts the Goyong Bridge since the early 1800s. The woman, named Siti Ariah, was allegedly kidnapped, murdered then abandoned in a rice field where the Goyong Bridge is now standing. She is one of the oldest urban legends known as "Si Manis Jembatan Ancol" (The Sweetheart of Ancol), which has also inspired many movies and a TV show. Her spirit has been spotted on the bridge wearing a white dress causing many fatal driving accidents, which is why drivers are told to honk before passing by.

The story of the Ancol Bridge Ghost is so famous that it has been made into several movies as well as a TV show.

Rumah Kentang (Potato House)

Yes, one of the scariest places in Jakarta is known as the Potato House. Seriously.

Located on Jalan Dharmawangsa 9 in Kebayoran Baru, it is said that a child living in the house died after falling into a pot of boiling water filled with potatoes. The legends say that if you pass by the house, you can sometimes smell boiling potatoes and hear a child crying.

And yes, they turned this into a horror movie as well. The trailer is kind of amazing in its absurdity (you'll certainly never look at potatoes the same way again).

Ghosts on the Road Babakan Siliwangi Dolls
