Autumn in the Balkans

Mist hangs over the mountainside
Through rain the autumn colours collide
Long since brown, the leaves have died
As ever in springtime they will burst into life

Barbed wire stands out against the sky
A sentinel guarding those bleak grey hills
The beauty of this sparse Fall scene
Reminds me somehow of distant fields

Inside the wire the quagmires grow
Soft underfoot, slippery yet firm
As air grows colder, rain turns to snow
The hilltops hidden once more

When I was a child, I loved this time
Trampling through piles of crisp gold leaves
Now I am grown, these memories remain
A distant time, now a deadlier game
