The snowbound city screams in silence
Mosques without minarets
Raped by violence
Flanked by mountains awash with blood
In the screaming city, graves are hastily dugGraves by the roadside, graves in the park
Mourners bury their dead in the dark
Cold ground embraces its children in death
Ceasefires broken, no pause for breathCity in death throes, yet life goes on
Tears wiped away, threads picked up again
A new dawn, a new day, what will it bring?
Massacre in the market place, screams of painHigh in the mountains the barrage begins
Rattle of small arms adds to the din
A child wanders lost, shock in her eyes
Hope ebbs away on a blood red tideThe snowbound city screams no more
Wasted and ruined like a haggard whore
What price peace in that poisoned snow?
Politicians pontificate
Sarajevo knowsSarajevo and Portsmouth
