Part Five: Before and After

The peace was announced far and wide. It was rumored in the cities, passed between the Shadowlands and the Underlands. Freedom was imminent. It was whispered excitedly between students in their classes, and discussed in hushed tones at the dinner tables. No one was ready to believe it.

When the day came, humanity crept up from their long-suffered hiding places, like Lazarus rising from the tomb. They slipped into the sunlight, blinking and pale and afraid, so afraid, as the world was reborn around them.

The shadows were there to greet them, not with claws and teeth, but with hands and smiles. Each was searching for their host, eager to reunite with their partner at last.

After three long years of fear and fighting, it was time to return home.
