LE'ANA AWOKE TO A FACETIME FROM the one and only Paige Bueckers, unaware they were on this level already, she hesitantly answered. Immediately, the girl was greeted with Paige's smile, all teeth on display.
"Le'ana!" She yelled extending out the final letters.
"Paige," Le'ana replied short and simple. "It's six in the morning. Go do something with your day."
"I see how it is," Paige replied in a joking manner, hanging up the call just to get on Le'ana's nerves.
One thing Paige didn't know was not a single soul on this planet was more stubborn than Le'ana. She wasn't going to cave and call first which was proven when Paige called her back twenty minutes later.
"Ok- I'm sorry. Now back to the problem. The team are hanging out tonight and you're coming." She spoke with confidence, not giving Le'ana a chance to decline the invite.
"According to who?"
"According to me," Paige spoke with a straight face. Her jaw was defined by a simple line, a line Le'ana's eyes couldn't help but trace. Her eyes were squinting stopping herself from a smirk finding its way onto her lips.
"Paige. I cannot just show up somewhere without an invite." She scolded, anxiety getting the best of her.
"Be for real. You're part of this team, of course, you're invited. Even if you weren't invited, I'm inviting you."
She groaned, despite not wanting to go Le'ana knew she couldn't let Paige down. The girl was persistent. "OK, Paige. I'll go." Rubbing her eyes, hoping to sleep soon.
What she didn't expect was a scream from the other side of the phone. Paige looked down at her screen just to see Le'ana with her eyebrows furrowed and a mean look plastered across her face.
"I- Uh- I'll let you get back to sleep," Paige said, fearing what would happen if she kept Le'ana awake any longer. "Just text me your dorm number, and I'll come get you when it's time."
Le'ana wasn't sure what happened in the several hours from when Paige called her to now, where she stood outside Aaliyah's dorm room but it was now or never. If you left it up to Le'ana, it would definitely be never.
Paige could feel the nerves radiating off Le'ana so she took the courage of knocking. The door swung open in a fast motion and KK stood on the other side of it.
The girl's nerves calmed when she was immediately pulled into a group hug by her new teammates. This was really where she'd be now. No more LSU, no more Kim Mulkey - just these lot. Le'ana saw no problem with that.
The team found their way towards the living room where beanbags, pillows and blankets were spread out and everyone took their places. Le'ana found herself on a beanbag alone, a nice fluffy blanket draped across her stiff body as she deciphered what to do. Paige had abandoned her, going to get a glass of water which led to each girl slowly stating their names, giving her a warm welcome which earned a smile from Le'ana in return.
Despite the nice introductions, Paige could tell the new girl felt anxious when she walked in so she dropped herself right next to Le'ana, squishing her in the process.
"Paige!" She shouted, unable to contain her laughter
"Bro- It was never that deep." She screwed Le'ana, earning a shove before settling in their seats.
It wasn't long before the girls found boredom in their conversation. Whilst a few questions aimed towards Le'ana piqued their interest it was very quick to run out of things to talk about. The movie serving as background noise wasn't of any interest to the group either.
When boredom strikes the Uconn girls, they can only rely on one person to find something to do. "Girl boo, you good if we go live real quick?" Asked KK, to which Le'ana nodded in reply.
That was KK's solution. It was her solution to any situation, finding joy in reading people's hilarious comments or doing talent shows, which may or may not lead to them getting banned.
"Y'all. We out here with Le'ana Rodes!" She screamed out extending the final syllable. Le'ana shyly waved at the camera struggling to hold in her laughter. In response, all the girls immediately shushed her, noting it was quite late at night. Laughs immediately followed over KK's childish behaviour regardless.
Very few questions were asked about LSU, mainly to avoid drama which was the last thing Le'ana wanted. Occasionally she would answer a question about them but the girls made sure to limit it to one or two.
"What's gonna happen when you play LSU?" Le'ana read out. The girls watched in silence, unaware of how to approach the situation.
"Silly question. You know we're winning." She muttered, more laughter erupting from the rest of the girls as well as Le'ana.
As KK, Le'ana and Ice continued mindlessly reading comments on the screen, KK couldn't help but read one out loud. "Le'ana ain't slick-" She muttered. "We all know that gun pink." KK finished off reading the comment, screaming as a way to cover it up
The rest of the girls began to laugh so much, that half of them had tears in their eyes as they got louder. "KK, stop reading comments before you actually read them." Scolded Paige. Preparing to say more on the matter, Paige opened her mouth, until Le'ana interjected with two simple words. Who knew two words could completely stop every thought circulating Paige's brain?
"Hot pink."
