That Git They Call a Teacher

That night, I couldn’t sleep. I know, that sounds silly. I decided, rather
than sit in my bed all night, I’d head downstairs and watch the fire. As I sat
there, I saw a house-elf come in. Seeing me, it bowed and began to speak.

“My apologies, Miss, I thought everyone was asleep, Miss,” The sweet little
thing said hurriedly.

I smiled, “Stand up. It’s no big deal. I couldn’t sleep.”

“Regardless, Miss, I should have been more careful.” The elf insisted.

“Its fine, and please don’t call me Miss, my name is Sky.” I told her,
feeling awkward.

She nodded and bowed. “Miss Sky, would you like for me to come back later?”

I rolled my eyes, “Don’t say Miss, I’m only twelve, not thirty. Please,
clean now, I’ll go wait upstairs so I don’t disturb you.”

“It’s alright Mi- Sky. You can stay here. I’ll leave the fire on overnight
if you’d like.” She said blushing.

“Thanks, I appreciate it,” I smiled at her genuinely. “What’s your name?”

     “Ivy,” She smiled shyly.

“Well, thank you, Ivy,” She then went back to her work without another
word. I felt horrible sitting there, but there was very little I could do.

I woke up the next morning screaming. This wasn’t unusual. Ginny had gotten
used to it ages ago since we shared a room. Sadly, I was in the common room, so
a few people woke up. Fred, George, Dean, Hermione, and Percy were all quickly
gathered around the couch.

“I’m fine,” I brushed off their worry and set out to the Great Hall.

I suddenly felt two presences behind me. “Why hello Sky.” Fred said in a
voice that was clearly up to something. I turned around before you could say
Peeves.

“What do you want?” I said in a cautious voice.

“A distraction,” George offered. I rolled my eyes.

“Why me,” I swung my head back.

Fred smiled. “Your sweet and innocent, so no one suspects you of things.”

     I snorted, “Me, innocent?”

“To them,” George said, “We know better.”

     “When,” I sighed, resigned.

They smiled deviously, “Now.” I rolled my eyes and set to strolling about,
waiting to run into Filch. They would somehow know when I’d done my job.

“Why are you roaming the halls?” I suddenly heard Filch’s voice say as he
appeared in front of me.

I smiled innocently and prepared to act, “I got lost. It’s been so long
since I’ve been in the Great Hall. I can't seem to find it.” At that moment, I
had my eyes widen slightly. “Am I in trouble again?” I whispered the last bit
and looked at my feet so my hair covered my face. I looked up again, wiping my
eyes as if I was crying.

He grumbled for a few moments, “No. Come on then.” He said, leading me off
towards the hall.

“Thank you, Sir,” I bounced slightly and set off behind him.

“Sky, what are you doing?” I heard Snape behind me. I silently cursed my
bad luck. What were the chances of me pulling a fast one on Snape?

“I got lost; I have no sense of direction. Filch was showing me to the
Great Hall.” I said in as honest a tone as I could muster. “I hardly remember
where anything is." I looked up at him with wide doe eyes and smiled. I could
see his harsh expression falter for a moment and realized what he saw. He saw
Lily, not me. I realized I may have gotten off scot free.

“Can we get to the Great Hall?” I smiled innocently. Then I heard the
explosions go off, two floors below, if I had to guess. Snape shook his head and
gave me a look.

“I’ll take Sky to the Great Hall; you can deal with the trouble makers.”
Snape said, staring at me. Filch ran off faster than I thought possible. I
prayed the twins had enough sense to get far away from the disaster they had,
undoubtedly, caused.

“Lost?” He questioned, a twinkle in his eyes that seemed out of place on
his sour face. I nodded, giving him a look that challenged him to question it.
He laughed.

“What’s so funny?” I asked. This was unexpected. He wasn’t angry, but
amused.

“Lying for your friends, it’s a habit your mother would have approved of.”
He looked at me with many memories in his eyes.

I looked up, smirking, “It’s also something my Uncle would have done, and
so would my father.”

A brief puzzled look crossed his face. “Your Uncle?” He looked lost.

“Uncle Sirius, Dad’s brother.” I looked up at him like he was stupid. He
looked confused, but let it pass.

“Regardless, you need to learn that lying to a teacher isn’t permitted.” He
smirked down at me.

“You can’t prove it,” I smile.

“The Weasleys will tell me if I offer then no punishment for whatever they
just did.”

“Bull,” I laughed and set off skipping to the common room. The twins
didn’t mind detention, not anymore. Besides, they wouldn’t get caught. Once I
got there, I headed to breakfast with Ginny. I sat down next to Harry and
George.

     “Thanks Sky,” George said winking.

I rolled my eyes, “I got in trouble. You owe me one.”

Then I turned to Ron as he got a howler.

“This ought to be good.” I whispered as it exploded. As ashamed as I was,
knowing the letter was directed at all three of us, subtly, I couldn’t help but
smirk at Ron.

It was a long first class, I’ll give you that. And transfiguration was
easy. Then we had Lockhart.

The first thing we had was a test about him. I’ll tell you a few questions
and my answers just to give you an idea of how annoying it was.

What is Gildoroy Lockhart’s favorite color?

Why should I care what the lunatic’s favorite color is?

What is Gildoroy Lockhart’s secret ambition?

How would I know? I wouldn’t want to be in his brain, it’s a dark, lonely, empty
pit.

I think you get the idea. Then he let out the pixies.

“Do something!” I yelled as they hung Neville from the roof. He spouted off
some random stuff and they stole his wand. Hermione and I set off simultaneous
freezing spells and proceeded to lock up all the little devils with Harry and
Ron. Then we helped Neville off the roof.

“That man is not a teacher,” I groaned to Harry and Ron.

“He couldn’t even get rid of the pixies,” Harry agreed.

“You and Hermione could teach better,” Ron added.

I laughed. “You could teach better, even with a broken wand.” I told Ron,
grinning. The three of us all laughed.

“Miss Potter,” I heard Snape behind me. Both boys gave me sympathetic
looks, but left me alone.

I turned around and glared at him. “Can I help you?”

“Detention, immediately after dinner,” He looked down at me.

I looked at him incredulously. “On what grounds?” I demanded.

“Lying to a teacher,” He said simply.

     “About?" I prompted.

“Going to the Great Hall,” He told me, smirking.

I smiled, for I had this thought out. “I didn’t want to go with you, so I
went to get a friend to walk me.”

“Too bad,” He said. I glared at him with enough fury to kill.

“I won’t go if there is no valid reason,” I hissed at him. I was an angry
little person.

“Dumbledore’s office,” He said simply and I followed him away.  Dumbledore
looked troubled to see me so soon. “What now?”

“So this morning, I got lost looking for the Great Hall, and no I’m not
kidding. Filch found me and was escorting me there. Snape interrupted and said
he’d take ,me because Filch was needed elsewhere. Snape accused me of lying, so
I went back to my common room to go with a friend instead. Now he wants to give
me detention.” I spat out, still glaring at Snape.

Dumbledore laughed, “Snape, can you prove she was lying earlier?”

“No, but I know it’s true,” He said simply.

Dumbledore smiled at me, “Then you can’t give her detention for lying or
leaving to find a friend. If you want her in detention find a new way to do it.”

I glared sparingly at Snape and left. He could be a real jerk sometimes,
but he was better than that git Lockhart.
