It was already lunch, and I was just getting ready to go to the cafeteria to see James. Maybe he knew something that I didn’t. Or maybe he wanted some answer too.

I just pulled a pair of jeans on me, a comfortable bra and a big sweater. I didn’t bother to comb my hair, or arrange too much. Actually I never did that. I never thought that I’m a beautiful girl, and I believed that it’s better to have something in your head than to be hot.

Maybe that opinion was influenced by the fact that I have never stayed in a city more than 6 months, meet people that I should care about and to be careful how I look or act. I’m not going to change now.

After I finished, I waited two more minutes and a guardian came to get me. His name was Aden, and he had the same logo on a badge, the “DM” sign.

He was a big and well done man, tall and strong like a macho. He remembered me of the cheerleaders’ partners and supporters. The guys they were losing their dignity for. I didn’t lose anything near this guy, but my freedom. He seemed so serious and attentive at the way to the end of the hall like it was the first time he was seeing this place. He was blonde; he looked extremely tough and concentrated. Like he was afraid of me.

Yeah, sure.

Anyway, arrived in the cafeteria, I saw James sitting on a chair at the most invisible table in that room, smoking a cigarette and talking to himself. He wasn’t in a good mood at all. But his face brightened and he casted a smile when he saw me. He waved to come next to him. The big guy was right behind me, I looked at him and then I went straight to James.

“Good afternoon, sunshine!”

“Hey! Are you alright?”

“I am now, although this morning I had some pains all over my body. Can’t remember what happened last night.”

“I got a letter from a lady called Christina Walters. She came in my cell after I woke up. She kept writing and analyzing everything I said.”

“I only know that they sedated and brought us here. When I woke up in the morning, I saw a man standing beside my bed, and I got scared. His name is Lucas Hunter.”

“I think it’s a kind of an association, but I hope this has nothing to do with my father. What if he is in this building?”

“I doubt that. It would’ve been too simple. You would’ve been too close to each other. I’m sure he’s alright. He’s like a hostage. We need to get more information about this place, and if they let us leave.”

“It’s like a jail but not really. I’m meeting Christina after the lunch. I’ll ask her then.”

I thought that everything was happening so fast. I arrived in Portland about 1 month ago, and in only 2 weeks I have been kidnapped and locked into a cell. I didn’t regret anything. In this one month I also met James and Adam. Although I was still mad on Adam about the fact he was so secretive with me. It was about my father. I knew it. He was the guy with the bad businesses. And James… He said he didn’t want to get involved, but he had to know what it was about if he took that choice.

“Lucas told me we’re allowed to hang around the building at different hours. He will give me a schedule. I will try to make something special. As special as I can despite the fact we’re trapped between the fences of a prison.” I dared to leave, but, in a second, he grabbed my arm and kissed me on the cheek. I turned red instantly but I didn’t hesitate and answered in kind by giving him a warm hug and a visible, shy smile.

Outside the cafeteria, Aden was waiting for me and at the end of the hall, Christina was standing at the end of the room holding the same clip-board she had earlier in my cell. She sketched a smile and walked forward in front of us. Aden was walking behind me with the same, concentrated, look on his face. We followed her until the end of the hall and entered a room that was as white as my cell. White walls, white floor, white furniture. No windows. No air! So I guessed it was Christina’s office. She motioned me to sit and told Aden to leave.

I sat at a loss, staring at the hypnotizing room while she was pursuing my file.

“So, Andi, I wanted to see you because we need to set some rules.”

Set some rules, huh? Is this a kind of an old, scary American series?

“I bet your friend, James, told you about some of them. Yes, you are allowed to hang around the yard but only supervised. I’m sure you and James won’t need more privacy.”

Oh, we will need, when we will plan to leave this odd prison where we’re kept as some mice. Then you can order your buddies to take care of other business.

“Here’s your schedule. You won’t dawdle around. You will have to learn. Both, you and James are going to stay here for a significant period.”

Her voice sounded superior to me this time. I realized she wanted me to respect those rules carefully and to collaborate but I also took it as a warning to be careful how I act. I had nothing to lose if I did that. I had no way out, anyway.

I nodded.

“Alright.” Take this and if you respect it perfectly you will leave this place faster than you imagine.”

She gave me that usual, good smile that was now starting to get me annoyed.

Aden was again waiting for me outside. After the speech Christina kept, I realized that I need to get used to this atmosphere if I was supposed to stay there for a significant period. So I opened a conversation.

“Do you ever talk?”

The sentence didn’t come out viciously from my mouth, but he still startled.

“Just watch your feet straightly to your cell.” He replied annoyed and careless to my question. So I did shut up and found my way to the cell, where I found James laying in my bed.

“You’re really relaxed about the whole situation, aren’t you?”

“No, I’m not relaxed at all, but if we’re going to spend a big part of our time here, then I try to adapt.”

“Me too.” I said while laying next to him.

He pulled me closer, and fit my head on his chest. He kissed me on the forehead twice and embraced me tighter.

“You’re not as bad as everybody says.” He sniggered.

He took his arm under my head and got down meeting my eyes.

“You’re actually awesome.”

The feelings were running inside me. I knew what I felt for him, and without making any move, he approached closely insomuch that our lips touched, snuggling each other. I loved this guy and I finally felt that I didn’t come to Portland to leave again in 3 months like I did in all the other cities. I was going to stay here for a long time and I had reasons to: my dad and James.

We didn’t dare to say a word, maybe because the tension between us what too tense, or maybe because we didn’t want to screw the feelings that were floating in the air.

I didn’t care and I fall asleep in his arms anyway.
