We roamed all night on the streets, in search for a car which was big enough for 5 people. James, Carmen and I supplied ourselves with more consistent meals, while Anna and Adam went for a small snack and a coffee to keep them strong until we were out of town. Adam hijacked a van and drove constantly for about 2 hours, but barely keeping his eyes opened.

Vampires didn’t need much time to rest, but for the sake of others, we halted at a cheap motel far outside the town, while James and I had to go shopping so we could save time and leave as early as we could.

We took the van and we drove back few miles to the nearest supermarket. We bought pillows and blankets, food, water and a carton of beer because James insisted. I bought myself a black hoodie, so I could easily sneak at night and I bought Adam a pocket knife so he could break into things.

Arrived at the motel, we parked behind the building and we made shelter in the back of the van. We didn’t want to waste our money so James and I spent the night in the van, laughing at stupid jokes and drinking beer, instead of getting a room.

I laid down on the blanket looking up at the cloudless sky and twitching James to lay next to me.

“Isn’t this fun?” James asked ironically.

“We’re going to have a blast getting ass kicked by vampires, you’ll see.”

He burst into laughter and drank the last drop of beer. He took my hand and kissed it, when I felt small stings of heat on the back of my palm. I closed my eyes and sighed, feeling how the heat moves on to my chest, my neck and stops on my cheek, tickling. I slipped my hand under his shirt, scratching, as we were shifting together. He sat over me, still playing with the lit fingers on my skin, and pulling my thigh across his back. After stealing a long kiss, he gazed charmingly at me and said:

“I love you.”

You shouldn’t have said that.

Did I love him too? He probably would’ve deserved it, but for some reason, I couldn’t give it all to him. I had a smile on my face and I was surrounded by pleasure, but I didn’t need this. I needed something more. I thought about Adam and I thought about Anna.

I cuddled him, avoiding looking into his eyes.

“I love you, James.” My smile turned into an emotionless mask.

I didn’t even have time to feel sorry for what I said, before hearing a car parking in front of the motel. James continued on kissing me, but my romantic mood was long gone so I asked him if we could check on the new guests. I quickly put on my hoodie, picked up a gun out of Carmen’s bag and flew around the building to inspect.

I couldn’t believe what my eyes saw. It was Aden, my own security guard from the Centre, who looked dead exhausted and hangover. It was 3 am in the morning, so I was glad it was still dark outside, because I was planning on kidnapping him and draining him of answers until I got what I wanted. James came right behind me, already aware of what I wanted to do, leaned over and asked me to be silent and careful.

“Go for the neck, for the spot which I put you asleep with.”

I nodded and jumped around a bit to speed up the shifting. When I felt ready, I squeezed the gun, watched and waited for Aden to open his trunk, so he faced away from me. I saw him swinging on his feet, close to falling and hitting his head on the ground, so I immediately ran to him, pasting him on the car’s body and showing off my fangs, but not getting any reaction other than a confused and surprised look. I hit his head with the gun and dragged the passed out body all the way to the back of the building, tied and thrown in the van. We waited 15 minutes, starting to get really anxious and so I asked James if he could wake him up by burning his wrist.
