Rosario, Argentina- 15 years old

The next day, both Leo and Jade woke up for school in the morning. They always hated school, mainly because of the people there, but also because of the work they had to do. Jade only had one class with Leo, so she had to survive throughout the rest of the day without him. Of course, they sat together during lunch, and met up with each other before and after school to walk to and from home, but that was never enough.

Most of the time, after school, they would go different places to practice football, but rarely, they went to one another's houses until they got sent back home. Their mom's knew each other extremely well, and every time their mom's got together, they had to hang out, too. Not that Jade was complaining.

Jade did her usual routine— brushing her teeth, washing her face, using the toilet, etc.— before going to her closet to find some clothes. When she was finally completely ready, she was dressed in a pair of blue jeans, a creme t-shirt, and black converse.

She grabbed her backpack and made her way to the kitchen to get some toast before walking to school. She kissed her mother and two brothers on the cheek before leaving, making sure to grab her pair of house key on her lanyard on the way out.

Leo's house was a little bit closer to the school than hers, so she continued walking until she saw Leo waiting for her outside his front door. He waved her over and she walked a little bit faster so she could talk to him.

"I was just about to leave without you." He joked as she scoffed.

"Please, you love me too much." She teased, not looking close enough to see the blush on his face. Although, he has left without her more than once, but she was too stubborn to admit that and Leo knew that.

They continued walking and talking, mostly about the latest football tricks they mastered, until they reached the school's front doors. Since they both had different classes for first period, this was where they split up.

"I'll see you later, ok?" Leo nodded to her before turning away and walking in the opposite direction as her. That was weird, she thought, normally he says he'll walk me to class or he'll talk to me at lunch. She shakes her head and keeps walking, I'm probably just paranoid.

With her hands on her backpack straps, she slowly makes her way to class, ignoring the looks and laughs she gets from her daily bullies. If she had been walking with Leo, they surely would've come up and started picking on her by now, she couldn't help but notice.

"Just keep walking," she muttered to herself, not looking up from her shoes on the ground. Eventually, she made it to her class without so much as a scratch or a harmful word her way. Maybe–, she thought but quickly scolded herself before finishing her thought. Of course not, she assured herself.

Classes without Lionel were always boring. Every girl in the class with her didn't want to talk to her because of her tomboyish personality and every boy never came close to her because of a reason she didn't know. At least none of the trouble trio, as both Jade and Leo liked to call them, were in this class with her.

After her first five classes, she made her way to the cafeteria where they would be serving lunch. Of course, she never really had enough money for a full lunch, so her and Leo would usually share one as they sat together at one of the tables or on the grass outside. Today was finally a nice day so she wanted to go outside.

As she made her way into the lunchroom, she looked around for her best friend, but he wasn't anywhere inside, so she thought to go check outside. Maybe he thought it was nice out, too.

After scanning the whole of the courtyard area, her brows furrowed, not seeing him anywhere there either. She couldn't remember him telling her something about leaving early, so why wasn't he here? Maybe he had an emergency and had to leave... but he would've informed me in some way, right?

Going back inside and getting in line, the only thing she could afford was an apple, so she purchased it, making her way out to the courtyard again. The only place available for her to sit and eat in peace was against the wall, so that's where she went.

The whole time she was eating, she saw a group of girls staring at her from the other side of the yard. They pointed and giggled, making her squint at them and try to finish eating in peace. After she was done and stood up to throw away her trash, she felt a tap on her shoulder and came face to face with the girls from earlier. She knew them as Sofía, Claudia, and Valentina from some of her classes.

"Where's Lionel?" Valentina asked, a little too sweet for Jade's liking. Not understanding why she wanted to know where her best friend was, she replied, a bit harsh,

"How should I know?" Some of her anger was because of Valentina's sudden interest in Leo and some because Leo left without any warning at all, leaving her alone in a situation like this.

"Well, we just wanted to know if you'd like to sit with us at lunch tomorrow." Sofía took a turn to speak. Why were they being so nice? she wondered. And why would they want to befriend me once Leo left? she asked herself, but he already knew the answer, she just didn't want to admit it.

"I don't know. I'll get back to you tomorrow." Jade says, walking away just as the bell rings and she scoops up her backpack, cruising through the hallways to go to her next class— one she had with Lionel.

Forcing herself through the door, she sat down in her usual seat in the back as people filed in through the door. Watching the door, she knew he wasn't coming, but she couldn't help but hope.

Gasping, she sees the person she had been wishing to see since this morning, in the flesh. He doesn't look at her at all, seemingly avoiding her gaze as he takes a seat at the very front instead of next to her like normal. Confused and hurt, she stands up to move seats, only to have the bell ring and the teacher clap to her students,

"Alright, visiting time is over, please sit down now." Jade sat back down in her previous desk and glares at the back of Leo's head as he breathes a visible sigh of relief.

The teacher, Mrs. Guerrero, writes a phrase on the board and starts the lesson. Jade takes her textbook out of her backpack and drops it on her desk, frustrated with the day. She writes down a few of the words on the board and doodles on the rest of the page, only to have the door open and a sheepish figure step in quietly.

She recognizes the figure as Claudia when the teacher scolds her and she winces. Mrs. Guerrero told her not to interrupt her lesson again and Claudia finally slipped away to go sit down. Scanning the seats, her eyes land on the empty seat next to Jade— where Leo was supposed to be sitting— and her eyes lit up, making her way to sit next to her.

"Hey." Claudia says to Jade before turning to the lesson and the only thing Jade does is nod, not looking up from her doodling long enough to notice Lionel staring at her and Claudia from the front of the room.
