Taking notes can be hard. At the end of the class you end up with several pages of messy, unreadable scribbles scatter throughout several pieces of random paper. Notetaking technique will save paper and frustration. Try these tips to organize your notes. 

1. Cornell

5. Store your notes in the same place everyday, have a method. Remember to always start with a new page. Take time to have notes you can read.

6. It your notes are messy, copy them onto the computer and arrange them in an outline like the ones above.


There are the basics. Here are the different popular techniques explained.

1. Cornell. Sepeate your page into three sections. The main section holds the notes. The side section holds and questions or key points. The bottom section is the summary. The title goes large on the top with your name and the date on the left side. Here is a picture for example-

2. Outlining. The title, your name, and the date go on top. Your first Category is marked with a Roman numeral (I) and the farthest to the left. The Main Idea of that category is indented one and marked with a letter (A). The Supporting Detail is indent twice and marked with a number (1). Here is an example-

3. Mapping. Mapping is making bubbles and is good for when you're brainstorming. But for note taking, your biggest bubble holds your Main Idea. The bubbles branching out from that hold the Supporting Details. The bubbles branching out from the Supporting Details holds the Examples. Here is a picture-

4. Charting. When charting, the top rom should have different categories. The column on the left side should state each item. Information fitting both should go in the corresponding boxes. Charting is good for organizing information.

5. Develop a method, always store your notes in the same place so you don't loose them. Always start on a new page. If this is a different lecture, day, or class start on a new page. This makes it easier to file your notes and keep track of what's where. Take time to have notes you can read. Note YOU can read. It's okay if your notes are messy, as long as you can read and understand them.

6. If your notes are really messy, copy them onto a computer as soon as you can. Arrange them in a nice outline. You will have a readable version of your notes and copying them onto the computer helps you remember them.


Note taking can seem hard a first, but there are many successful methods that will help get your notes in order.
