Luca slips his hand into one of the rectangular vents on the side of the boat.
"He can't talk," he hears Julie say from the opposite end of the boat.
Luca looks down at the face watching him from the water.
Thank you... but you have to go back down. You're vulnerable up there.
Sebastian sinks beneath the surface, but Luca has a feeling he'll stay near. He turns back and pulls himself up painstakingly slowly so he doesn't make any noise. Salty water snakes through his hair and down his face.
He lifts himself, wrapping his forearm around the ledge.
Something starts beeping.
Fear clutches his rabid heartbeat. They'll see him.
He hurriedly swings his leg around the banister and rolls onto the deck. He watches Julie and her constraint from behind, begging the fates they didn't hear him.
"It's them," Kriss breathes, standing by the wheel. He jams the key into the slot and starts the engine.
Luca, crouched low to the ground, spots a wrench half covered by a tarp. His arm inches forward, dripping fingers curl around the handle.
Apprehension squirms in his stomach as he steps forward, slowly extending his crouch.
