Notes

A side story/spin-off of Y/N's solo journey.

It's not so much a chapter continuation of the arc, it's pretty much its own separate novel instead...oops. I didn't want to create a whole separate story for this spin-off though, so I just inserted it here for ease of access.

However, reading/skipping this chapter will not affect your experience with the plot progression at all, so read if you're interested to see what she was up to!

Thank you to those who read this, as it is probably my favorite part of this entire story!

Enjoy this 24.6k long chapter :')

The weight of his sins is one he'll carry for the rest of his life—for he is a devil disguised as a hero who claims he will save the world.

But no one was exempt from the misfortunes of fate—as seen by the cursed girl who is but destined to die for the sake of the world. So perhaps his only form of redemption comes with saving her life.

Or

In which he finds strength in kindness, and how she learns the face of courage.

Part 1
The Encounter

He had always held something heavy in his eyes, something dark that had festered and settled when he was too young. Now, people called him a formidable foe, a leader greater than none other. But beneath the weight that sat within his gaze, there was a restlessness caused by all his troubles.

The ginkgo leaves were still bright and persisted against the early autumn breeze. It was only a matter of time before they too fell victim to the winds of time. Perhaps his prime years had already flown by as well. He was all too old, too tired, too anxious, to gaze freely at the trees or the flowers in the courtyard. Time did not wait for him. It would have him in its grasp as soon as he let his guard down.

So he'd guard his entire being with walls so thick that time itself wouldn't be able to hold him down unless he was ready to give himself to fate.

Despite the momentary peace, he was always expecting a dire situation to approach him in his rest. Hence, he'd resort to—figuratively—sleeping with one eye open. Nonetheless, he was always aware of his surroundings. He always made sure he was one step ahead of everyone.

Yet, he knew of reunions and how unpredictable they were. And here in this instant, Chisei could have never fathomed a reunion like this so soon.

"You came back," he glanced at her wounded figure, bandaged and bruised. Proof of her feats of battle, proof of her survival.
