The Wait
Elisha.

Three months later

The surgery went well, the doctor's managed to save her. In fact, besides the bleeding, there wasn't much to save at all. The bullet hadn't punctured anything vital at all. She was alive.

Elijah was moved over to our Pack hospital once she was deemed save to move because my parents couldn't stand the idea of having their daughter on Russo territory and having to drive all the way to Nathaniel Russo's Pack just to see her.

Yes, Nathaniel's Pack not Alexander's.

Right after her surgery we moved her to Nathaniel's territory, she wasn't safe to move yet but we had no other choice all we could spare was a day. We all reckoned that that story would fly much better the one involving Alexander. Luckily for us, I guess, that only took one day. I told my father that she had spent the night at my house. Then once she was transported to his territory we called them.

Once we all remembered that my father had already known that Eli knew Nate we thought we might as well make him the friend that needed help. That would explain why she never mentioned the friends' name, why she never spoke to our father and why someone would then be plotting to kill him.

My parents ate up the whole story. They didn't even ask what she was doing at his place. It was all running smoothly until the doctor announced that Eli was in a coma.

A coma.

He can't tell if she will have memory loss or not because he needs her to wake up. But she's been like this for three months. Not even a slight change. Not even a twitch.

I couldn't stand seeing my parents for too long, it just broke my heart. They had just gotten her back, she only just returned from that stupid getaway of hers and now this. Now they've lost their daughter all over again and this time we don't know for how long or if she'll even be the same once she's awake.

I visit her every day and Alexander visits her every night.

Alpha Jay wants to go to war with Nate's Pack over Eli. My mom surprisingly agrees but my father doesn't. I would've expected it to be the other way around, I expected my father to want blood I expected him to cause a riot. Instead, it was he and I who convinced my mother and Alpha Jay out of it.

I mean, it's not Nathaniel or his Packs' fault. Why let innocent wolves be harmed over something we can't change? She's not going to wake up because we went into war so why do it? She's still alive, just... unresponsive. All we have to do is wait for her to come back to us, I know she will.

"Pops?"

"Yes, Elisha." My father's eyes were focused on Eli.

She was home, in her room. It was pointless to occupy a hospital room. We don't need anything more from the doctors or the hospital. She just won't wake up, the machine is literally - in my opinion - there to remind us that she's not back yet. Otherwise, she can do everything on her own, everything the machine can do that is, we have to feed her and all that other coma related stuff.

Alexander never feeds her. He never does anything but lay beside her. When he thinks no one's looking he'll tear up but never cry. He mumbles all types of shit into her ear but she doesn't respond. I don't even know if she feels the sparks. Or if he does for that matter.

"Why won't you let Alpha Jay start the war?"

I had been asking myself that question for the past three months now, it was about time I asked the correct individual.

My father stared at me for a while, "He's her mate. I don't want her to wake up to the news of us attacking or having attacked him."

I shook my head, "He's not her mate."

I remember Eli mentioning that our father was somewhat convinced that Nathaniel was her mate, I couldn't understand why he was so hooked on that thought. He knew very well that Nathaniel could not have a mate. I mean even I remembered that, why couldn't he?

"I know she's found him." He says, "Because he's what's keeping her here."

"What?"

Could something like that even be possible?

"A silver bullet to the head is death. But here she is barely hanging on but hanging on. He is keeping her here. Her wolf's not ready to let him go yet. His wolf's not ready to let her go. He has to be powerful to have such a strong hold on her."

"Nathaniel can't have a mate," I said.

"Oh, yes. I forgot... Then some other Russo." He waves his hand dismissively.

I furrow my brows, "Why must it be a Russo?"

"They all smell similar and although she mostly smells of Nathaniel when she comes home. She always, always smells like the ocean and they all have that smell. Only they do."

"Why haven't you stopped her from hanging around them?"

"She's nineteen. She can do whatever she likes."

I knew he did not believe that there's not a chance he feels that way. There's something more to it, so I don't stop asking until he tells me what I already know in my heart and it shatters me.

"But she could end up like Isaiah."

"No, one of them is her mate, she's obviously safe. They won't let her..." He trailed off.

Won't let her get hurt, I know those are his unspoken words, words that hold little truth considering the state she's in but they are words I know still stand. Alexander would never let anything happen to my sister, I know it. This was just inevitable, he had come to warn her and he had everything in place to make sure she was safe.

Had he not had the colossal episode, I bet he would have had all his wolf senses working correctly and he might have heard the bullet coming or at least seen its reflection as it was making its way toward the room.

Looking up at my father I ask him the one question we should have asked months ago and the question I now know the answer to.

"Do you care?"

He looks at me for the first time since I started the conversation, "That one of them is her mate?"

"Yeah." My heartbeat picks up the slightest bit.

"Right now, I most certainly do. They were supposed to protect her and they failed." He tries to hold back his tears, "They failed her."

His emotions becoming too much for him, he stands to his feet and leaves.

I watch my sister closely waiting for any reaction. Any sign of life.

"Please just come back now. It's been months, Elijah. We want you back, I want you back. I miss you so much." I cry, "Dad doesn't even care that a Russo is your mate. You ran away for nothing."

From the moment he helped convince my mom and Alpha Jay I knew, I knew all this craziness started for nothing.
