Chapter Sixty-One

Eli

Because Dani and I woke up late, it's been a rush to get out of the house and to work on time. I think we just scrape in by the skin of our teeth, actually. The rushing hasn't really given me a chance to process this morning's events. I don't even know where to start. Dani let me sleep on the bed, which helped her to sleep better. She was dreaming about me and that made her awful nightmare end on a better note. If those things aren't enough to set me up for a good morning, the banter this morning certainly is. I have a feeling Dani was trying to cover up her discomfort on the whole matter, but the positive thing is that she felt like she could joke around with me; that's a major step forward. I'm so very proud of how far she has come and I don't mean that in a patronizing way at all. She is an amazing person and she's coming out of her shell a bit now.

The morning passes quickly and it's almost noon when I knock on the Cap's door.

“Hey Cap, can I have a quick word, please?”

“Sure. Come on in Eli... What can I do for you, son?”

“I spoke to Captain Greggson last night. He's making an arrest on the Russian bank case later on today. I was wondering if I could watch the interview?”

“Just watching? No getting involved?”

“No sir, I'm not getting involved. I just want to watch. I won't even let the guy see me, I promise.”

“What's your interest in this case? You haven't left it alone. And don't tell me it's just because you don't like open cases. That won't wash with me.”

“I have a Confidential Informant who has given me some info on the Russian Mob. The guy that's being arrested has links to both the Bratva and the bank. It seems like the bank is being used as a meeting house for the Bratva. I think Greggson wants to bring this guy in, see what he says and then go from there. He's obviously building a case against the Bratva so I'm trying to give him as much help as I can.”

“A CI on the Bratva? That's one brave person. You giving this person any form of protection in return?”

“Kind of. They haven't asked for any, so I've pulled in a favor and asked a friend to watch out for them.”

“And that's it?”

“Sir, I appreciate your concern, but everything is fine. My CI is well aware of the risks and my friend is ex-Army, he was under my command in Iraq. He's good at what he does. But I still would like to watch the interview, if you can spare me for a couple hours.”

“Sure. Just don't get seen. I'm assuming Greggson will call you when the arrest is made?”

“Yes sir. As soon as he does I'll let you know. Thanks Cap.”

“No worries. Eli? If you think there's any trouble, you do need to read me in.”

“Yes sir. There's no trouble. Not right now, anyways, but I'll keep you in the loop.”

As I leave the Cap's office, I can't help but think he knows it's Dani. He didn't need to say it, I can just tell. That's why he's pushing the protection issue and asking to be kept informed. Until he pulls rank and makes me tell him, it'll just have to stay the way it is for now. Dani is engrossed in her work as I walk passed her desk. I whisper, “Hey.”
