We live in a day in age
where violence is the way
to subside from our fears;
thinking there isn't another way
to put our problems at bay.

The way we solve our
mistakes is through the undeniable
dismay of shame
thinking "what better way than
to cope with our mistakes
through the shame we obtain"

"Treat others with respect" they say
but let's be real,
do they really do the same?
People would much rather talk-the-talk
than walk-the-walk.
Pointing the finger at other
people's flaws,
never daring to look at what
they themselves have become.

We hear gun shots daily
and yet nobody seems fazed
in the slightest way,
ignoring the potent
inhumane ways
that haven't changed.

We hear stories of young girls
who've been subjected to misogynistic
abuse because they were wearing a
skirt too short and should've been more careful. The same young girls start
to doubt their worth; because rather
than being looked upon by their character,
they will always be judged on by
what others can visually see.

There's young boys who are being told
to act a certain way because if you don't,
you're certainly gay; the same boys
are told to put aside their emotions.
"Men don't cry" they say — surely they
know the damage they inflict,
or maybe they will one day.

The only way you make it,
is through doing the exact thing you've told yourself you'd never do.
It's called the cycle of abuse.

So where does it end?

We can choose to walk away,
but there's going to be a much greater
price to pay.
At the cost of the future kids and grandchildren
the future daughters and sons

Is this the kind of world we want them to run?

If change is going to come,
it must come today,
because I can't stand knowing that one day children will think it's okay to act on violence in such a way.
