I started to call Onika from my bed and she answered right away.

"Hello? Onika?" She wasn't saying anything and the screen was black.

"I'm here." Her voice sounded different. Scratchy and shaky.

"What happened? Do you want to talk about it?"

"Why would I?"

"Huh?" What did I do? I'm just trying to be a friend.

"Why would I tell you shit when all you're going to do is laugh and make fun of me for being dumb? All you people are so fucking judgmental, I would rather deal with it by myself."

"What did he do?" Whatever he did had to be bad, she sounded like she was about to cry.

"I just said I don't want to talk about it."

"I promise anything you say now will never be brought up again. It won't ever leave this phone call."

"And you'll stop making jokes about him?"

"I'll chill out on the jokes but I can't make any promises that they'll completely stop."

I can't help it, they're too funny not to share.

She sighed, "Fine."

"Okay, so tell me what happened."

"He showed up to dinner almost half an hour late high as hell on God knows what. Then some bitch was blowing his phone so I left. We didn't even get it order. I'm about to bill him for these Ubers, I didn't trust him to drive me home in the state he was in."

"Who do you put up with this? You know you don't have to."

"It's complicated."

"What's complicated about you being treated badly? You deserve better."

There's not enough complicated in the world to make me put up with what she's putting up with.

She sniffled and I swear I could hear her crying but it was quiet I couldn't be sure.

"Are you there?"

She didn't say anything but obviously she was still there.

"I haven't known you that long but what I do know is you're extremely intelligent and fine as fuck. You don't have to accept this shit from a barely attractive nigga, you could get much better. Like a basketball player or a just a remotely good guy. If everyone telling you to leave someone, maybe it's for a reason. You know-"

She hung up on me. Is she serious?

I would've been lot more mad if she didn't text me a second later.
