Masks

85 24 16

A carnival of lies,

A circus of deceit,

Parades through all our lives,

Through everyone we meet,

Behind the joyous frolics,

That seem happy and carefree,

Lies something much more darker,

Something that we never see.

Some people seem respectable,

Others generous and kind,

But turn your back a moment,

An enormous change you'll find,

Their masks come off - they've altered,

Down comes the great façade,

To see this abject difference,

Can prove so very hard.

Down comes the velvet curtain,

Off go the bright footlights,

Washed off the actors makeup,

Appears a terrible sight,

You realise life's stage-play,

Was never all it seemed,

The fellow cast and chorus,

Weren't how you ever dreamed.

Backstage the script is changing,

From comic to tragic mellow,

From "Much ado 'bout nothing",

To "Hamlet", "Lear", "Othello",

Or perhaps it's "Julius Caesar",

I think as I'm impaled,

Treachery and "Infamy!",

Are likely to be wailed!

True colours shown so brightly,

The truth always comes clear,

People are not as they seem,

Beware who you draw near,

My aim here is to warn you,

One of my many minor tasks,

We all keep up appearances,

But what's beneath the masks?
